Tigers Vs. Angels: Luke Potkonen Optioned To Toledo To Make Room For Drew Smyly

The Detroit Tigers needed to make a roster move to make room for tomorrow's starting pitcher, Drew Smyly, and MLive's Chris Iott reports they have optioned relief pitcher Luke Putkonen to Triple-A Toledo.

Putkonen had appeared in just one game since being recalled earlier this month, pitching 2.1 innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout in a loss to Baltimore on Aug. 19. He's 0-2 with a 6.52 ERA in seven appearances for the Tigers this season.

Smyly (4-3, 4.42 ERA) is being recalled to replace injured starter Doug Fister in the rotation. Smyly has started 15 games for the Tigers this season, but this will be his first appearance since July 6. Smyly will face Dan Haren (8-10, 4.90 ERA).

Fister injured his groin in his start last Sunday.
