Following a tough loss in Chicago, the Tigers return home for a vital series against the Oakland Athletics.

The Tigers trail the White Sox by three games following Monday's loss, and trail the A's in the wild card standings by five games. If Detroit wants to make the playoffs, time is running out. Tuesday night's game begins a three-game series with Oakland.

The Tigers will send Max Scherzer to the mound for the opener. He's 16-6 with a 3.77 ERA on the year. Scherzer has been one of the top pitchers in baseball over the past month-and-a-half, not dropping a decision since July and posting a 1.79 ERA in his last seven starts.

The Athletics will send A.J. Griffin to the mound. He's been even hotter than Scherzer, posting a 6-0 record and 1.94 ERA in 11 starts on the season.

Tuesday's game will start at 7:05 p.m., be on Fox Sports Detroit and AM 97.1.
