Royals vs. Tigers preview: Detroit tries to keep winning to maintain top spot in AL Central

The Detroit Tigers play the third game of a four-game series against the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday night at Comerica Park as they try to remain atop the American League Central standings.

After beating the Royals in the first two games of the series, the Tigers have won three of their last four games to take advantage of a 1-6 slide by the Chicago White Sox and grab a share of the division lead. Both teams remain 4.5 games behind the leaders in the AL Wild Card race.

The Tigers are scheduled to start Rick Porcello (9-12) on the mound against the Royals. The right-hander will try to snap a nasty streak of seven consecutive starts without a win which includes his only no decision among those starts in his last outing when he gave up eight hits and four runs in less than five innings against Cleveland.

The Royal expect to counter with right-handed starter Jeremy Guthrie on the hill. Guthrie has pitched well of late and is 4-0 in his last nine starts as the he's struggled to get run support from the Kansas City offense.

Wednesday's game starts at 7:05 p.m. ET and will air on Fox Sports Detroit.
