Former Lions defensive backs Alphonso Smith and Justin Miller worked out for the team on Wednesday as Detroit prepares for a Monday night showdown with the division leading Chicago Bears in Week 7.
Smith said he's been staying in shape and has watched every Lions game this season. Smith started 11 of 23 games in which he played for the Lions in 2011 and 2012 and recorded 55 tackles and eight interceptions during those two years.
The Lions cut Smith in training camp along with Miller. Miller has five years of experience with the Oakland Raiders and New York Jets from 2005 to 2009.
The Lions' pass defense ranks 16th in the league and is giving up 227.6 yards per game to opposing offenses. Detroit also ranks 28th in the league with just two interceptions through six games.
Detroit is coming of a come-from-behind overtime win over the Philadelphia Eagles, 26-23, last Sunday and will look to win two in a row for the first time this season against the division-leading Chicago Bears.
