Entering this year’s Ohio State-Michigan game, all the emphasis seemed to be on the Buckeyes and their pursuit of an undefeated season. But so far, the Wolverines have proved they’re no slouch either and currently have a 14-10 lead early in the second quarter.
The Michigan offense has had little trouble moving the ball early against an Ohio State defense playing without star defensive lineman John Simon (who is out Saturday with a bursar sac injury). Michigan got on the board in the middle of the first quarter after Devin Gardner hit Roy Roundtree for a 75-yard touchdown pass. They added another score on a Gardner quarterback sneak early in the second quarter.
Now the question becomes whether the Wolverines will be able to stop Ohio State’s fast-paced offensive attack headlined by sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller. The Buckeyes scored on a Carlos Hyde three-yard touchdown run and later added three points on a Drew Basil field goal.
At 8-3, Michigan was eliminated from the Big Ten title chase on Friday following Nebraska’s victory over Iowa. The Wolverines will still play in the postseason though, likely at either the Capital One or Outback Bowl.
Ohio State is ineligible for postseason play because of NCAA violations committed under former head coach Jim Tressel, who is in attendance in the stands.
