The Michigan State football program hasn't been off to this good of a start since the 1960s, so it should come as no surprise that their No. 5 ranking is making some history.
According to the MSU football Twitter page, the Spartans haven't been ranked this high in the AP Poll since Oct. 10, 1999. The Spartans made it up to No. 5 after beating No. 3 Michigan in a game between undefeated teams. MSU moved up to fifth in the AP Poll after the win, but a loss in back-to-back weeks after the Michigan game prevented the ranking from being any higher.
Also according to the MSU football Twitter page, the Spartans' No. 5 ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll is higher than ever before. The USA Today Coaches Poll began back in 1991 and never before have the Spartans been ranked as high as No. 5. That alone shows you how far this program has come under Mark Dantonio.
