Michigan State Assistant Mark Montgomery Hired By Northern Illinois

Michigan State assistant basketball coach Mark Montgomery has been hired by Northern Illinois as the school's head coach. He emerged as one of the main candidates earlier in the week, and by early Wednesday he appeared to be the front-runner. Now he is officially the head coach of the Huskies after leaving MSU.

Montgomery was on Michigan State's coaching staff for 10 years. He was the associate coach from 2007 to this past season, and he served as the acting coach for a game when Tom Izzo was suspended. He worked at Central Michigan for four years before moving to East Lansing, and now he is moving to DeKalb, IL.

There's no word yet on who will replace Montgomery on MSU's coaching staff, but there is definitely lots of speculation. One name that has been thrown around a lot is Jim Boylen, who was recently fired by Utah. He was on Izzo's staff at MSU before taking the Utah job, and some think he could return to the Spartans. Boylen is just one of many names being tossed around right now based on pure speculation, though.
