After being originally charged with assault and battery for an April 29 incident where he allegedly struck an 18-year-old man in the face with an open hand, former Michigan State basketball player Brandon Wood was ordered to perform 20 hours of community service in a Cook County court on Friday.
Fortunately for Wood, the assault and battery charges were each dismissed, and he was instead charged with criminal trespassing after refusing to leave a social gathering where he was reportedly asked to leave multiple times. Wood posted a $1,500 bond and was released on Friday afternoon, and still plans to explore his options as a pro basketball player.
A fifth-year transfer from Valparaiso who was allowed to bypass the NCAA's mandated one-year transfer sit-out rule for academic reasons, the 6-foot-2 Wood averaged 8.8 points per game last year for Tom Izzo's Spartans. He was the leading scorer with 14 points in Michigan State's NCAA Tournament-ending loss to the No. 4 seeded Louisville Cardinals, but struggled with his shot often during the season and did not quite live up to his lofty pre-transfer hype as an elite scorer.
