Red Wings prospects invited to Canada’s National Junior Team selection camp

Three of Detroit's top prospects will try out for the Canadian junior team.

Three Detroit Red Wings prospects have been invited to the Canadian National Junior Team selection camp, which takes place from Dec. 11-13. Those three prospects are Saginaw goalie Jake Paterson, Blainville-Boisbriand defenseman Xavier Ouellet and Sault Ste. Marie defenseman Ryan Sproul. The three of them will compete with 34 other top Canadians born in 1993 or later to make the junior team.

Paterson, an 18-year-old, was selected in the third round of the 2012 draft at No. 80 overall, while Ouellet, who is 19 years old, was picked by Detroit in the second round of the 2011 draft at No. 48 overall. Sproul, meanwhile, is 19 years old and was also a second round pick in 2011, drafted seven spots behind Ouellet at No. 55 overall.

At the 2012 IHF World Junior Championship in Alberta, the Canadian squad took home third, which is of course a slight disappointment in those parts. Six of the players on that third-place team will be back at the selection camp.
