When Chris Allen was kicked off the Michigan State basketball team, an exact reason for his departure was never made public. As is to be expected, there was lots of speculation about what led to his departure, but some of the "out there" type of rumors have been denied by Allen.

He said the most disturbing allegation was that he had impregnated the girlfriend of Durrell Summers, his former roommate and teammate.

“He doesn’t even have a girlfriend,” Allen said. “If you don’t believe me you can call Durrell Summers or anyone else on the team. They’ll be the first to tell you, ’Chris is my guy.’ I never tried to go after anyone’s girlfriend. But you know how some reporters are. They’re trying to start their own website or something, so they make stuff up.”

Allen apparently was kicked off the team for tardiness and academic-related issues, although no specific incident or incidents have been reported on as of right now.

Ex-Michigan State guard Chris Allen is going to transfer to Iowa State. The Cyclones were one of the schools Allen visited in recent weeks and made his final list along with UTEP. Allen garnered interest from a number of schools, including Notre Dame, UConn, Memphis and South Florida.

Allen was kicked off Michigan State's basketball team earlier in the month, but he left the program on good terms with Tom Izzo, who actually helped him find a new school.

"A year away from basketball and a fresh start will be beneficial for his development as a player and a young man," Izzo said in a statement. "I’m sad to see him go, but he and I have worked together as he has searched for his next school. With the excitement around Coach Hoiberg as he builds his program, Iowa State is a great fit for Chris, and we wish him nothing but the best."

Allen had this to say about his decision to play for Iowa State:

"I chose Iowa State because it felt like the right place for me, much like Michigan State did when I came out of high school," Allen said in a statement. "It has a great family atmosphere that makes it feel like home. I was really impressed with Coach (Fred) Hoiberg and the rest of the coaching staff."

Because of transfer rules, Allen will not be eligible to play for Iowa State until the 2011-12 season.

As soon as it was announced that Chris Allen was leaving the Michigan State basketball program, he started receiving lots of interest from other schools. Even though he wasn't leaving voluntarily and was kicked off the team, other schools immediately expressed interest, including the likes of Notre Dame, UConn, Memphis and South Florida, according to his mother.

None of those schools are on his final list of possible destinations, though. Lisa Byington is reporting, via Tom Izzo, that Allen has established a final list of Iowa State and UTEP, with late interest coming from St. John's. No word on when a decision will be made, but Allen visited Iowa State last week and spent the weekend taking in UTEP.

Whichever of those schools Allen picks, he will have to sit out the 2010-11 season and will not be eligible to play until 2011-12.

Chris Allen's status with Michigan State has been up in the air for months, but that is no longer the case, as Tom Izzo has kicked him off the team.

"It’s been no secret that Chris Allen’s been in a tenuous position since spring,” Izzo said. “There were multiple obligations that Chris had to meet in order to return for his senior season. While he did make progress through the summer, he has failed to meet all the obligations and will not be a part of our program this fall.

"I know he’s going to be a great player. He deserves another chance to play basketball somewhere, but it’s in everyone’s best interest that it be somewhere other than Michigan State. Like every player, he has to mature a little bit. I think a year away from the game will be beneficial for his development as a person and a player.”

Allen had this to say about Izzo's decision:

“Coach was straightforward with me about what I needed to do to remain a part of the team,” Allen said in the statement. “Unfortunately, I didn’t meet all the obligations. I have enjoyed my time at Michigan State and I appreciate all the support from my fans, and everyone associated with the program.

“It’s unfortunate things didn’t work out, but I’m leaving on good terms with my teammates and coaches.”

Although Izzo decided it was best for Allen to leave the team, he is apparently trying to help him find a new home. In fact, it looks like Allen could end up at South Florida, where he would play for former MSU assistant Stan Heath. From Jim Comparoni:

I expect Chris Allen to transfer to South Florida. Izzo spoke with Stan Heath about Allen possibly moving on to USF last month. Amicable.

As for MSU, I doubt losing Allen will affect them too much. Does is hurt to lose talent and experience? No doubt. But MSU has so much talent from top to bottom on their roster that I don't think this will make a big difference in what the Spartans accomplish next season. With Allen or without Allen, they are still a favorite to win the national title in my mind.

Although Chris Allen is participating in offseason workouts with the Michigan State basketball team and recently told WILX in Lansing that "everything is fine and this is just all rumors," Tom Izzo says that nothing has changed about this situation. While Allen may want to come back to MSU for his senior season, it's not certain that will happen just yet.

"I guess he's making progress with that," Izzo said of Allen today from an AAU site, with sneakers squeaking in the background, "but nothing has changed."

WLNS' Lisa Byington also talked to Izzo after Allen's TV appearance to clear up where exactly things stand with Allen.

Izzo says "nothing has changed and (Allen) still has some things to prove both on & off the court"

(Izzo) stressed to me that Chris Allen's status is still very much in limbo. and it will be izzo and not Allen who decides if he is on roster

It's a little odd that Allen made an appearance on TV to talk about how everything is fine when Izzo doesn't sound quite as confident. There's no doubt Allen is working his way back in order to continue being a part of the Spartans, but Izzo isn't completely convinced that he is deserving of a spot on the team yet. Whatever Allen did was serious enough for Izzo to seriously examine his place on the team, and so far Izzo is not sold on Allen returning for good.

Ever since the 2009-10 basketball season came to a close, rumors have been swirling about the status of Michigan State guard Chris Allen. The weirdest part about this story is that the rumors seem to change on a week-to-week basis. One week he will be transferring, while the next he will be staying. What exactly is behind all of these rumors is unclear, but something is definitely up. Case in point:

During the last week and a half, depending on the source, Allen either was or wasn't in the meetings that Izzo had with his team about the Cavaliers job. On Tuesday, however, Allen was at the news conference.

So that ends it, right? Not exactly. While Allen entered the room and stood in the back with his teammates, he did not join them on stage when Izzo began to speak.

At the beginning of the month, Tom Izzo had this to say about Allen:

"Nothing has happened yet,'' Izzo said. "He's on a short leash. He has some growing up to do. There were times I didn't know if he wanted to be here.''

For now it looks like Allen is still with the Michigan State basketball program, but it's definitely unclear if that will continue. He and Izzo don't seem to be on the same page at the moment, although perhaps they are working toward getting there.
