Brandon Inge returned from the 15-day DL on Wednesday night and immediately made a difference in the Tigers recently uber-anemic offense. Despite admitting that he would play with some "minor to low-level aching," Inge was healthy enough to knock three singles against the AL Central leaders and bring home the Tigers' lone run in the 8th inning.

Normally, you wouldn't think a career .238 hitter could make much of an impact, but Inge's early return from a broken hand is actually a very welcome addition to the Tigers depleted lineup. Inge is hitting .269 this season and .360 since June 30 over the course of 14 games.

When Brandon Inge was hit by a pitch against the Rangers and broke his hand back on July 19, his prognosis was a recovery time of four to six weeks. As we learned yesterday, however, Inge was way ahead of schedule with his recovery and was able to begin a rehab stint with West Michigan last night. That rehab stint went so well (Inge had two doubles and an RBI) that Inge didn't need to spend any more time on the west side of the state, as he is returning to the Tigers tonight.

After two weeks of surviving without key bats in the lineup, the Tigers finally get somebody back. They activated Brandon Inge from the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, the first day he was eligible after fracturing his left hand on July 19.

Inge is expected to be in Detroit's starting lineup at third base Wednesday night against the White Sox at Comerica Park. Jhonny Peralta, the third baseman the Tigers acquired from Cleveland last week to fill in for Inge, could shift over to shortstop or designated hitter.

Inge is going to take Danny Worth's spot on the roster, as he is headed to the disabled list with a bruised left heel.

Brandon Inge was originally supposed to be out four to six weeks because of his broken hand, but he is ahead of schedule and is actually going to begin a rehab stint tonight.

The Tigers announced just before the day game that Inge is heading out on a rehab assignment to Class A West Michigan, starting tonight. Sounds like he could be back before next week.

Inge has been working hard to rehab his broken hand and took batting practice yesterday and this morning. Right now it looks like he's on track to officially rejoin the team prior to next week's road trip to Chicago. It would be great if that turned out to be the case, as the Tigers' lineup needs all of the help it can get.

Casey Fien spent all of one day with the Tigers before being sent back down to Triple-A Toledo. This move comes as no surprise considering he gave up two home runs and three earned runs in only two-thirds of an inning last night. He was briefly called up to take Brandon Inge's spot on the roster and serve as extra depth in the bullpen since the Tigers were stretched thin on Monday, but he has now been replaced by Scott Sizemore.

Sizemore played third base for the Mud Hens last night, and that is where he is expected to play for Detroit. Carlos Guillen is staying at second, so third is the logical landing spot for Sizemore, who spent the first month and half of the season in Detroit before being sent down to Toledo.

In light of Detroit’s five games in four days and 14 inning affair Monday night, the Tigers decided to bring up another arm instead of a positional player to fill Brandon Inge’s roster spot:

Inge placed on 15-day DL today. Tigers have recalled contract of RHP Casey Fien from Toledo. #mlb

This move appears to be only temporary, as sources say Jeff Larish might be the best bet to get a call up in a few days to take over third base.

For more analysis on this move and impending ones, check out SB Nation’s Detroit Tigers blog, Bless You Boys.

Inge was hit by a pitch in the bottom of the third inning and left in the fourth. When he was hit, it didn't look like he was hurt too bad. He actually seemed a bit irked that the trainer came out there and was content with shaking it off. Obviously we now know that he was hurt beyond something you can just shake off, as the Tigers will be without their third baseman for 4-6 weeks.

What this means in the short term is that you can add third baseman to the list of needs the Tigers have as we near the trade deadline. Although Inge is expected to be back right around the end of August/start of September, the Tigers are going to need someone of a major-league caliber to fill in for him for the time being. While the Tigers probably could get by with someone from Toledo (i.e. Jeff Larish), especially if they're out of the AL Central race by the end of the month, competing for a division title will likely require a move of some kind to fill the void created by this injury.
