Will Rhymes’ fantastic effort in the Tigers 9-4 rout of the Angels on Sunday won’t be enough to save his job.

Rhymes had three hits and drove in two runs and also scored twice, but Carlos Guillen’s impending return meant someone had to go. Unfortunately, it’s going to be the surprisingly sure-handed young infielder Rhymes.

“We look like fools, probably, because he had three hits,” manager Jim Leyland said. “But Carlos is the second baseman and we have nowhere to play Rhymes.

Rhymes hit .259 in his time with the Tigers, driving in four runs and committing no errors at second base. That error-less streak almost changed Sunday when Rick Porcello, who was covering first base on a ground ball, couldn’t handle a throw from Rhymes. Fortunately for Rhymes, Porcello was instead charged with the error.

Guillen did fairly well rehabbing his strained calf at Single-A West Michigan. He hit .333 in two games and picked up a walk in his stint for the Whitecaps.

Guillen’s return means that Magglio Ordonez will be the only major cog missing from the Tigers’ lineup. Ordonez is still a long way away from returning, and with the way the Tigers are playing (just six wins since the All-Star break), it looks like it will be too little, too late.

Carlos Guillen started his rehab assignment on Friday with the West Michigan Whitecaps and managed to play six innings before being subbed out. Here’s the pertinent Guillen information via the Whitecaps wrap up:

Carlos Guillen played six innings and drew a walk in the first inning that helped West Michigan rally for an early run. After grounding into a double play in the third, the 34-year-old from Venezuela reached base on a fielder’s choice groundout in the sixth. Guillen is expected to play with the ’Caps again on Saturday night in Dayton and possibly Sunday before rejoining the Tigers when he is eligible to come off the Disabled List on Monday.

It's looking like Carlos Guillen will be ready to be activated next week in due course. According to Tigers beat reporter Jason Beck, he'll begin a short rehab stint on Friday to prep:

Carlos Guillen going on rehab after all. He'll report to Class A West Michigan on Friday to start assignment. #Tigers

Guillen was hoping to return to the Tigers without a rehab assignment. He has made a living on the DL over the past three seasons, so maybe it wouldn't have been such a terrible idea to let Guillen practice with the Tigers and then plug him straight into the lineup next week. Any time Guillen spends on the field playing at full speed is the next injury waiting to happen.

No word on who will get the demotion when Guillen returns, but Will Rhymes is the presumed odd man out. While Ryan Raburn and Don Kelly probably deserve red slips in their lockers, the Tigers continue to keep them around due to their ability to suck at more than one position.

If it were me, I'd say so long to Raburn or Kelly, put Damon back in LF, Guillen at DH, and keep Rhymes around to play the two bag. But what do I know.

As a part of the move to bring Jeff Frazier to the big leagues, Scott Sizemore was optioned to Triple-A Toledo.

Sizemore was brought up last week to fill in for Brandon Inge at third base, but with the trade for Jhonny Peralta his services are no longer required. Sizemore wasn’t being much help anyway, hitting just .205 in 117 at-bats this year with the Tigers

The reeling Tigers made another roster move after Thursday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, according to Fox Sports Detroit:

Dave Dombrowski announced that the Tigers will purchase the contract of outfielder/1st baseman Jeff Frazier from Triple-A Toledo and designated Jeff Larish for assignment.

Jeff Frazier, soon to be 28 years old, is a former third round selection who has spent the past six years in the bus leagues. He's hitting .273 this season while leading the Mud Hens in HR with 23. If that doesn't make a believer out of you, here's what Dombrowski had to say:

"He has made significant progress in making himself a big league hitter. We think he is a guy that will give us some help offensively," said Dombrowski during the announcement.

Meanwhile, Jeff Larish is a goner due to inconsistent play in Detroit when given the (minimal) opportunity. Larish was drafted 10 rounds after Frazier in 2004, but earned first crack at the bigs over Frazier. A .239 BA in 200+ plate appearances over three seasons has signaled for a change.

The Tigers needed to clear two spots on their 40-man roster to accommodate the additions of infielders Jeff Larish and Will Rhymes. Both were called up from Triple-A Toledo to replace Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen, who were placed on the disabled list after Saturday night’s 3-2 loss to Toronto.

Starting pitcher Billy Buckner was released from Triple-A Toledo and reliever Casey Fien – who was a brief major league call-up this past week – was designated for assignment to make room for Larish and Rhymes.

Buckner, acquired from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Dontrelle Willis, posted a 3-5 record and 9.40 ERA in eight starts for the Mud Hens. Opposing batters just teed off on him, knocking 60 hits in Buckner’s 37.1 innings.

Fien was called up this week when Brandon Inge went to the DL with a broken hand. On Tuesday night, he gave up three runs (two of them home runs) in 0.2 innings of mop-up duty during Tuesday’s 8-0 loss to the Rangers.

In two appearances with Detroit this season, Fien compiled a 10.13 ERA. He was designated for assignment during Spring Training, and had brief stays in the Red Sox and Blue Jays organizations before returning to the Tigers.

Tigers second baseman Carlos Guillen has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right calf. Guillen left Saturday's game after the fifth inning with the injury, which really came out of nowhere considering he didn't seem to be hurt out on the field. He just left the game and that was that.

With Magglio Ordonez also being placed on the disabled list, the Tigers are going to call up Jeff Larish and Will Rhymes from Toledo. Larish can play either corner of the infield and Rhymes is a second baseman. Here's the skinny on both, from Jason Beck:

The 27-year-old Larish, a Tiger for parts of the last two seasons before being taken off the 40-man roster over the offseason, is batting .275 with 15 home runs and 55 RBIs for the Hens. He can play third base, has been there much of the season for the Hens, and probably will get some time there in Detroit now with Sizemore still being treated cautiously with his hip injury.

Rhymes, also 27, has never been in the Majors, but he has hit his way to the cusp of the big leagues this season. His .304 batting average ranks fifth in the International League to go with a league-high six triples, 19 doubles, 34 RBIs and 20 stolen bases. He has a chance to play a bigger role than one might expect in Detroit.

Rookies have played a big part in the Tigers' success this year, and now it looks like the performance of the younger, unproven players will be what makes or breaks Detroit's season. Considering the Tigers' lineup is starting to resemble the Mud Hens', I'm not very optimistic going forward.

As if losing Magglio Ordonez tonight for six to eight weeks wasn't bad enough, the Tigers got more bad news when Carlos Guillen left the game with what is being called a right calf strain.

Guillen came out of the game after the fifth inning rather mysteriously at first. Everything seemed to be going fine for Guillen, who made a very nice behind-the-back play earlier in the game. Then he wasn't out there at second base during the top of the sixth inning after straining his right calf, and how long this injury is expected to sideline him is unknown.

Scott Sizemore, who was called up earlier this week to help fill in for Brandon Inge, went into the game for Guillen and hit an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth. That leaves just Alex Avila and a sick Johnny Damon on the bench, as Ramon Santiago had to go in for Ordonez at DH.
