It looked scary when it happened, but it appears the line drive that Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga took off his right ankle won’t force him to miss any time.

Head athletic trainer Kevin Rand said that “indications are good” that Galarraga will make his next start:

“Armando has minimal swelling today, and he has pretty good range of motion,” Rand said. “He was able to do his conditioning. He should be OK.”

Galarraga took a line drive off the bat of Boston’s Kevin Youkilis in the fifth inning on Friday that knocked him out of the game. Galarraga was one out away from getting out the frame, which would have qualified him for a win, but was taken out. It appeared that Galarraga wanted to stay in and at least get the last out, but Jim Leyland erred on the side of caution and yanked him.

From the Tigers' Twitter page:

Galarraga left tonight's start with a right ankle contusion. Visit tigers.com for more information.

All things considered, that's not too bad at all. In fact, Roy Oswalt left a start earlier this month with a left ankle contusion, and he went on to make his next start as scheduled. It was a play very similar to the one that forced Galarraga to leave tonight's game, so hopefully his injury will be something that just goes away after a few days.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Armando Galarraga was drilled in the right ankle by a line drive. It was a direct shot to the ankle, and Galarraga went down immediately in severe pain. Based on the Tigers' recent luck with injuries, my initial reaction was, "Here we go again."

The good news is that after a few minutes, Galarraga got up and walked off the field under his own power. It looked like he was trying to convince Jim Leyland and trainer Kevin Rand to let him stay in the game since he was only an out away from qualifying for the win. Both Leyland and Rand were shaking their heads, however, as they didn't want to take a chance on letting Galarraga stay in there. In fact, they didn't even let him take a practice pitch to test the ankle out.

Based on Galarraga's reaction and the fact that he walked off the field under his own power, I'm hoping this was a stinger and nothing more. Considering how unlucky the Tigers have been with injuries, it'll probably be something worse, but hopefully they get a break for once.
