The Lions had room for one more player on their practice squad, and they decided to use it on tight end Joe Jon Finley, signing the former 49er today. His addition brings the practice squad up to the maximum of eight players. It now looks like this:

The Lions made a trade on Saturday and four moves on Sunday that were not confirmed until earlier today.

The trade, which sent Alphonso Smith to Denver in exchange for Dan Gronkowski, also involves draft picks. The picks involved are undisclosed, but the Lions' release stated that the two teams "swapped" selections in the 2011 draft. Whether or not that means they simply swapped picks in one round or something along those lines is unclear, but picks changed hands in this trade.

The other moves confirmed today involve the release of Rocky Boiman and Dennis Northcutt and the addition of Stefan Logan and Spencer Havner. The interesting thing about Havner is that he is listed as a linebacker rather than a tight end. Originally it looked like he would play tight end for the Lions, just as he did last year with the Packers, but instead it appears his main position will be linebacker. When he entered the league a few years ago, Havner was a linebacker.

The Detroit Lions made their practice squad official this morning, announcing that seven players have been signed to it:

The Lions have room for one more player if they want to add another body. For now, though, it appears they are content moving forward with these seven players. All of them were on the Lions' roster prior to Saturday's cutdown, so they know the system and will help serve as the scout team in practice.

In addition to claiming Spencer Havner off waivers, the Lions have also claimed Stefan Logan, formerly of the Pittsburgh Steelers. To make room on the roster, linebacker Rocky Boiman was released.

Logan is a return specialist. His position is technically wide receiver, but he is being brought in to be a returner, as he set the Steelers single-season record for kick return yards a year ago.

Boiman was just signed last week after DeAndre Levy injured his groin. Whether or not letting him go means Levy is expected to be ready to play next Sunday is unclear, but the Lions had seven linebackers on the roster, giving them the flexibility to let go of Boiman.

Although the final round of NFL roster cuts was held yesterday, the Lions are not done adjusting their roster just yet. Just as last year following the final round of cuts, they have already made a move by claiming a player released by another team off waivers. A few moves like that were made this time last year, and today the Lions made one by claiming Spencer Havner off waivers.

Havner was released yesterday by the Packers. He started his career as a linebacker and converted to tight end last offseason. In 2009, he appeared in all 16 games, starting once for Green Bay. In total, he had seven catches for 112 yards and four touchdowns.

In order to make room on the roster for Havner, the Lions released Dennis Northcutt. That means that Detroit has four receivers and four tight ends on the roster right now.

The Detroit Lions had until 6 p.m. ET to trim their roster to the required 53 players on Saturday. Some of the cuts were announced earlier today, with surprising names like Jon Jansen and Ko Simpson among them.

But one of the biggest names was saved for last, in cornerback Dré Bly. Here are the final cuts just announced, courtesy of MLive.com’s Tom Kowalski:

Running Backs: DeDe Dorsey

Wide Receivers: Brian Clark, Tim Toone, Michael Moore

Offensive Tackles: Jon Jansen, Cliff Louis

Offensive Guards: Noah Franklin

Offensive Centers: Dan Gerberry

Defensive Tackles: Rob Callaway, Landon Cohen

Linebackers: Caleb Campbell, Vinny Ciurciu

Cornerbacks: Dré Bly, Eric King, Paul Pratt, T.J. Rushing, Dante Wesley, Jonathan Hefney

Safety: Ko Simpson

Kicker: Steven Hauschka

Earlier in the day, the Lions also acquired cornerback Alphonso Smith from the Denver Broncos, in exchange for tight end Dan Gronkowski. That squeezed at least one defensive back off the roster, though it’s not clear who Smith supplanted.

Gronkowski would likely have been among the final cuts, as well, had he not been traded to Denver.

Fans, bloggers, and media have been waiting for the Detroit Lions to announce their final roster cuts at 6 p.m. ET Saturday. So naturally, the team just sent out a release saying that those final cuts won’t be announced until 8 p.m. ET.

Maybe Jim Schwartz and Martin Mayhew want to have some dinner after the Michigan game, then release the final cuts?

As you might imagine, the beat writers who cover the Lions aren’t exactly thrilled with this development.

MLive.com’s Tom Kowalski:

Lions just announced that they won’t release their cuts until 8 p.m. … Don’t ask me why …

Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press:

#Lions just sent out an email saying they’re not announcing their cuts until 8 pm. Seriously?

The Detroit News’ Chris McCosky:

Lions won’t announce cuts until 8 p.m. Ridiculous

Hope those guys didn’t have dinner plans on a Saturday night.

Kowalski added later that perhaps the Lions are waiting until each of the final cuts have been told of their release before making an announcement.
