The old timer Detroit Red Wings just got a little more seasoned.

Veteran forward Kris Draper and goalie Chris Osgood will both be in the lineup tonight as the Red Wings finish their three-game California trip in Los Angeles.

“This is kind of like a Disney movie,” Draper said, grinning. “Happy ending. Ozzie and I, coming out, back together again in L.A.”

Osgood will start in place of Jimmy Howard, who earned a well-deserved rest after stopping 41 shots to blank Anaheim 4-0 last night. It will be Osgood’s first start since Oct. 30 when he beat Nashville 5-2.

“I just want to get playing again,” he said. “I felt good prior to when I got hurt. Hopefully, I can pick up where I left off. That was the best I’ve felt for a while.”

There’s been no word on what line Draper will play on, though the likely scenario will be somewhere on the fourth line rotation with Drew Miller and Patrick Eaves, along with Jiri Hudler. With that in mind, Miller would be the likeliest to sit tonight, so if you’re looking for a prediction my bet is Draper playing with Helm and Eaves tonight.

Red Wings forward Kris Draper has missed all of the 2010-11 season because of a groin injury. Originally the expectation was that Draper would be out a week or two at most, but the injury didn't get better and he eventually had surgery to repair a sports hernia. He has been rehabbing the injury ever since and is finally ready to make his return to game action.

"I've been full-out practicing. I've been working out before practice, working out after,'' Draper said. "I've done everything to make sure I'm ready when I get the call. It's been a long time. It's been a frustrating time.''

Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock said earlier this week that Draper is "probably" going to play on this road trip. This means that he will likely be in the lineup tonight against Anaheim or tomorrow against Los Angeles. Detroit heads home after Saturday night's game and plays San Jose on Monday, so if he doesn't crack the lineup out west, expect him to be ready to go at home against the Sharks.

Detroit Red Wings forward Kris Draper returned to the ice Saturday, skating with the team at practice for the first time since his hernia surgery in mid-October.

“Just taking it easy, first couple of strides is something I’m being smart about,’’ Draper said. “Kind of crossing over and pivoting and once I got going I felt pretty good.’’

Draper went on to explain that he was happy to take part in activities difficult to do on his own, such as passing and receiving the puck, and shooting in full stride.

As of right now, however, no timetable has been set for Draper’s return to the active roster.

"Draper will have surgery tomorrow and is out four to six weeks,” general manager Ken Holland said. Holland said the Wings won’t put Draper on long-term injured reserve because they don’t need to yet.

Draper hurt his groin in training camp and a sports hernia was discovered earlier this week. The Red Wings can afford to sit Draper for now though, as forwards Johan Franzen and Justin Abdelkader are both healthy enough to return to the lineup.

Detroit Red Wings center Kris Draper missed all of training camp and the preseason with an injured groin. The injury has also kept Draper out since the NHL regular season began, and last week, the Wings put him on injured reserve.

After skating on Sunday and Monday, however, Draper still felt something wrong.

From MLive.com:

“Not good,’’ Draper said. “I just went for a little twirl yesterday, felt all right. Then went at it today and felt pretty good and just tried to explode and take a couple of faster strides. That’s where I really felt it. Got off the ice.’’

According to Draper, the area where he originally sustained the injury now feels fine. But the pain has “crept up higher,” which led team doctors to believe Draper is now suffering from a sports hernia.

As a result, Draper will visit Dr. William Meyers of Philadelphia for a consultation. Meyers has worked with several other NHL players, including Tomas Holmstrom and Darren McCarty. He also operated on Draper in 2007, when he previously suffered a sports hernia injury on his right side. This injury is on Draper’s left.

Recovery and rehabilitation from sports hernia surgery typically takes approximately eight weeks. Though recovery time depends on the condition of the athlete. And Draper is presumably in good shape.

Kris Draper's injured groin is going to keep him out for at least another week, because the Red Wings have put him on injured reserve.

Taking Draper's spot on the roster for now is Doug Janik, who will play tonight against the Colorado Avalanche.

By being placed on injured reserve, Draper is ineligible to play "for a period of not less than seven days." He will still be able to attend meetings and travel with the Red Wings and even practice. Because the Wings didn't expect him to be ready to go for an actual game for at least the next week, though, they opted to put him on IR and fill his spot on the roster with Janik.

Kris Draper didn't push things too hard on Thursday when he skated at Joe Louis Arena, but he was at least able to test his injured groin a bit.

"Gingerly," Draper said of how he skated. "I went out there in sweats and was out there for about 10-12 minutes. Felt good. Obviously I didn’t push it or anything like that." Draper said he would try to talk athletic trainer Piet Van Zant into letting him skate with his hockey equipment today. Draper resisted any temptation to do more than he was supposed to in his first stint back on the ice.

Draper isn't going to rush back and will likely miss the start of the regular season. Luckily for the Red Wings, they have so much forward depth (knock on wood) that they shouldn't need Draper to come back too quickly, so he should be able to take it easy until he is 100% healthy.

Veteran forward Kris Draper has missed most of training camp and the exhibition season with a groin tear, and he may miss some of the regular season as well.

The tear was discovered during an ultrasound on Friday, and that’s much worse than Draper originally anticipated.

“There’s definitely something going on in there,” Draper said.
“The good thing is, after Sunday’s preseason game, we don’t play till Friday, but I’m not kidding myself,” Draper said. “I’ve got a lot of catching up to do, with what these guys have been going through and playing games."

There’s also the competition factor. Draper is fighting with four other guys for three spots on the team’s fourth line. If he misses time into the regular season schedule, there’s a good chance his spot might be gone by that time anyway.

“The one thing I can control is, when I do come back, there’s no setbacks. Mentally, there’s not a chance I could handle that. I gotta be patient with it, be smart with it, so that’s why I haven’t put a time limit. I haven’t really thought that far.”

Draper is a veteran and with the plethora of talent at Detroit’s disposal, there’s no way he’s going to rush back into action without being 100 percent.
