Michigan State coach Tom Izzo returned to the hardwood tonight for the first time when his MSU squad hosted Texas in a Top 25 showdown.

But it’s what happened last weekend that still has people talking.

Izzo was suspended for Saturday’s matchup by the NCAA with Prairie View A&M because of a “secondary violation” for employing a person associated with a prospect. The person in question was paid $475 for working at the Spartans’ summer camp, which is what everyone else was paid.

Izzo obviously isn’t too happy about it.

“I like myself more when I’m ticked off,” Izzo said. “Right now, I like myself a lot.”

Izzo watched his squad blow out Praire View, 90-51, from his home on Saturday. Izzo called it the most embarrassing events in his coaching career, but says he’s trying to move on.

“They made the decision they made and I’m going to make the future decisions I’ll make,” Izzo said.

This obviously isn’t on the scale of the Cam Newton scandal, and it shouldn’t be treated as such. We’re talking about $475.

One thing that does have Izzo worried, however, is his presidency of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. While the violation was minor at best, a violation doesn’t look good on one’s resume.

(Recap from The Sports Network)

East Lansing, MI – Durrell Summers scored 15 of his 25 points from beyond the arc and No. 14 Michigan State had no trouble in a 90-51 victory over Prairie View A&M despite playing without head coach Tom Izzo.

Draymond Green added 11 points, while Kalin Lucas and Delvon Roe scored 10 apiece for the Spartans (8-3), who have won three of four.

Trant Simpson scored 17 points and Demondre Chapman had 13 for the Panthers (2-10), who have dropped two straight.

Izzo served his one-game suspension for a secondary violation of NCAA rules stemming from the hiring of a summer camp counselor who was associated with a prospect.

The Michigan State head coach called the violation unintentional and isolated and said he regretted that it happened.

His Spartans were fine without him.

They forced 14 turnovers in the first half for a 42-27 lead at the break and were never threatened by an overmatched Prairie View A&M team in the final 20 minutes of the game.

It was a much-needed romp for the Spartans on the heels of their 77-76 squeaker over Oakland last Saturday and a loss to Syracuse four days before that — their third setback to a national powerhouse this year.

Michigan State, which has also dropped games against Connecticut and Duke, scored the first seven points of the game and never relinquished the lead. The Spartans went ahead by as many as 18 points in the final minutes of the half when Summers drained one of his five three-pointers to make it 39-21.

The Panthers cut their deficit from 15 points to 13 after Cortney Bell hit a jumper for the first bucket of the second half. But the game was never closer than that.

Michigan State made it easy on the Breslin Center faithful by keeping the lead over 30 points for the final 4:15 of the game.

This was the first-ever meeting between the teams…Michigan State shot 50 percent (32-of-64) while holding the Panthers to 33 percent shooting…Summers was 5-for-7 from three-point range and the Spartans were 8-for-17 as a team.

GAME NOTES: The 14th-ranked Michigan State Spartans are heavily favored in tonight's non-conference matchup with the Prairie View Panthers.

Prairie View is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and has played a tough non-conference schedule. The team has suffered back-to-back losses, including an 87-63 setback to Texas A&M on December 8th. That was the most recent outing for the Panthers, so they should be well rested this evening.

As for Michigan State, it has won two of its last three games to move to 7-3 overall, including 4-0 at home. The Spartans have been idle since last weekend when they barely got past Oakland by a 77-76 final. The only losses to date have come against Duke, UConn and Syracuse, three of the nation's truly elite teams. As usual, Michigan State is expected to challenge for the Big Ten Conference title this season.

The Spartans will play this game without the services of head coach Tom Izzo, who has been suspended for one game for a secondary violation of NCAA rules the program committed last summer.

This game marks the first-ever meeting between Michigan State and Prairie View on the hardwood.

Trant Simpson and Brandon Webb scored 11 points apiece for Prairie View A&M in the ugly loss to Texas A&M last time out, and Michael Griffin pitched in 10 points off the bench. The Panthers connected on only 36.9 percent of their field goal attempts, including a 31 percent effort from three-point range, and they were outscored 16-6 from the foul line. Prairie View was dominated on the boards by a 46-35 margin, another contributing factor in the setback. Overall this season, Simpson is scoring a team-high 12.1 ppg, but he is shooting just 35.5 percent from the floor. The Panthers are generating only 65.4 ppg while permitting 81.2 ppg.

Kalin Lucas is averaging 15.2 ppg for Michigan State, which is netting 76.4 ppg while allowing 68.0 ppg opponents on 40.1 percent shooting from the floor. Durrell Summers checks in with 14.6 ppg on the strength of his 42 percent accuracy from three-point range, and Draymond Green provides 12.7 ppg and 9.1 rpg. Lucas posted 25 points and five assists in the victory over Oakland last weekend. Summers and Keith Apling posted 12 points apiece, and Draymond Green netted 11 points and five assists. The Spartans turned the ball over only eight times and earned a 21-11 edge in points from the foul line, the two most obvious reasons for the win.

Michigan State is one of the more solid teams in the country, and while the Spartans may have been a bit overrated early on, this group will do its best work in March. There is no doubt that this game will result in a lopsided victory, and the Spartans could get on a roll in the coming weeks.
