Ex-Michigan State center Garrick Sherman announced last month that he was planning to transfer. Now, he has decided on a new school: Notre Dame.

Coming out of high school, Sherman picked MSU over Notre Dame. After spending two years at MSU, he is now headed to South Bend, and he is excited about getting another chance to play for the Fighting Irish.

"I'm pumped," Sherman said by phone from East Lansing, where he is finishing up his final semester at Michigan State. "I'm excited for the second chance to come to Notre Dame. Everything just fit."

Sherman was intrigued by Notre Dame's run of transfer success stories dating back to eventual NBA first-round draft pick Ryan Humphrey and continuing last winter. Following two seasons at Mississippi State, former Irish guard Ben Hansbrough jumped from a Southeastern Conference afterthought to Big East player of the year. Scott Martin, who hosted Sherman during his visit, also enjoyed a solid year in his first season at Notre Dame after transferring from Purdue.

Sherman will sit out the 2011-12 season and be eligible to play for the 2012-13 campaign.

Michigan State sophomore center Garrick Sherman has decided to leave the basketball program and become the latest Spartan player to transfer. The move to transfer was announced by Michigan State in a press release on Monday. Tom Izzo had this to say about the decision:

"I met with every player after the season about making a commitment to the program and each other," head coach Tom Izzo said in the release. "After spending some time at home and talking with his family, Garrick Sherman has informed me that it’s important to get a fresh start elsewhere. We appreciate his contributions over the last two seasons and wish him the best in his basketball future.

"I continue to look forward to this offseason as we develop with players committed to Spartan basketball."

Sherman echoed what Izzo had to say, stating this:

"I have enjoyed my two years at Michigan State," Sherman said in the release. "I love my teammates and coaches and appreciate the way they helped me develop as a player.

"After the season, I met with Coach Izzo and after talking things over with my family, I believe it’s time for a fresh start and a new opportunity."

It's not clear where Sherman will transfer yet. One could joke that the early leader is Iowa State considering former Spartans Chris Allen and Korie Lucious transferred there. You could also throw out UCF, where former MSU center Tom Herzog transferred a year ago, although I would bet on him going to a school in one of the power conferences.
