Detroit, MI (Sports Network) – Max Scherzer scattered four hits over eight scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers continued their dominance of division rival Chicago with a 3-0 win to sweep a three-game series.

Scherzer (4-0), who collected seven strikeouts, is off to the best start of his young career.

Austin Jackson had two hits and an RBI, while Alex Avila and Brandon Inge also drove in a run for the Tigers, who have won nine straight over Chicago and four straight overall. Detroit hasn’t had this much success against the southsiders since a 10-game stretch during the 1923 campaign.

John Danks (0-3) was touched for three runs on nine hits in six innings for the lowly White Sox, who have dropped 10 of their last 11 contests. Juan Pierre and A.J. Pierzynski each had two hits in defeat.

Miguel Cabrera singled, Jhonny Peralta walked and Brennan Boesch singled to load the bases with no outs in the fourth. After Danks got Casper Wells to chase a third strike, Avila had a broken-bat ground out to score Cabrera and put the first run on the board.

The Tigers, though, squandered the great opportunity to blow the game open when Inge flied out to end the inning.

Scherzer, meanwhile, was looking good through the first four innings with a no-hitter, but it was broken up by Pierzynski’s lead off bloop single into center in the fifth. However, the right-hander got out of the inning without any damage.

Detroit tacked on a couple of runs in this sixth on Inge’s double into the left-field corner to bring home Avila from first. Then Jackson doubled in Inge with a shot into the left-center gap for a 3-0 lead.

Scherzer kept cruising through the eighth and Jose Valverde pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save of the season.

Detroit outscored Chicago, 21-3, in the series. The White Sox were held scoreless for the last 20 innings of the series…The Tigers will host Seattle for a three-game series and have won four straight at home…The White Sox will continue an 11-game road trip at New York. Chicago is 1-6 on the trip…Chicago’s Omar Vizquel turned 44 on Sunday. He went 0-for-3 with a walk.

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers aim for their ninth straight win against the AL Central-rival Chicago White Sox when the two ballclubs collide this afternoon at Comerica Park.

Detroit has won eight straight and 10 of the previous 11 meetings with the White Sox, and has outscored Chicago by a 18-3 margin in the first two contests of this three-game series. It posted a 9-3 triumph in Friday's series opener and followed that by handing the Pale Hose a 9-0 loss yesterday afternoon.

Brad Penny recorded his first win in a Tigers uniform by throwing seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball with three strikeouts and two walks. Ryan Perry and Al Alburquerque both added a scoreless inning of relief, while Ryan Raburn and Alex Avila finished with three and two RBI, respectively, for the Tigers, who have won three straight and eight of their last 11 games. Detroit is unbeaten in four straight at home.

"I was just throwing strikes and cut out the walks," Penny said. "Tonight we had great defense and turned out a lot of runs."

The Tigers, above .500 for the first time this season, will host Seattle for three games after this series, and haven't won nine in a row against the White Sox since a 10-game stretch during the 1923 campaign.

Detroit young starter Max Scherzer will try to continue his career-best start this afternoon when he toes the rubber. Scherzer is 3-0 with a 4.30 earned run average in four starts this season and is coming off Monday's 8-3 victory at SEattle in which the right-hander allowed two runs in six innings with seven strikeouts.

Scherzer has fanned seven batters in back-to-back starts and has lasted at least five innings in every outing so far this season. He has made four career starts against the White Sox, going 1-1 with a 3.34 ERA.

The lowly White Sox will continue an 11-game road trip Sunday and have lost two straight and nine of their last 10 games.

In Saturday's shutout loss in the Motor City, Brent Morel led the offense with a team-best two hits for Chicago, which was outhit by a 15-5 margin and received a rough outing from losing starter Edwin Jackson. Jackson was banged around for eight runs -- seven earned -- and 12 hits in 5 2/3 innings.

"Guys have bad outings. They just happen," Chicago catcher A.J. Pierzynski said of Jackson. "But he battled."

Chicago, which is 1-5 so far on the trek, will head to the Bronx to take on the New York Yankees for four games following this current set with Detroit.

John Danks is still searching for his first win of the 2011 campaign, as he sports an 0-2 mark with a 3.00 earned run average in four starts. Danks will take the hill Sunday and his second loss of the season came courtesy of Tampa Bay in a 2-1 loss on Tuesday, when he was reached for both runs and seven hits in seven innings.

Danks struck out five Rays batters and has recorded that many K's in each of his four outings this season. The lefty's also lasted six or more innings each time on the hill. In 11 career starts against the rival Tigers, Danks is 3-4 with a 4.12 ERA. Detroit won 10 of 18 matchups with the Pale Hose a year ago.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Brad Penny tossed seven innings of one-hit ball and got plenty of offensive support as the Detroit Tigers routed the White Sox, 9-0, in the second of three games at Comerica Park.

Penny (1-2) carried a no-hitter into the sixth and finished with two walks and three strikeouts. He had given up 20 runs in 21 1/3 innings over his first four starts of the season.

The shutout was made easy by a Tigers offense that churned out 15 hits. Alex Avila had three of them, including a two-run triple during a five-run fourth inning. Ryan Raburn also drove in three for Detroit, which has won three in a row.

Chicago starter Edwin Jackson (2-2) was rocked for eight runs -- seven earned -- in 5 2/3 innings. He allowed 12 hits and four walks as the White Sox lost for the ninth time in 10 games.

The Tigers broke out in the fourth, which Brennan Boesch opened with a double. He moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Raburn's base hit to left.

After Jhonny Peralta reached on an error by left fielder Juan Pierre, Avila tripled to center to make it a 3-0 game. Brandon Inge brought Avila home with a single, and later scored when Magglio Ordonez grounded into a fielder's choice.

Penny lost a perfect game bid by hitting Carlos Quentin with a pitch in the fourth. He had a no-hitter until Brent Morel hit an infield single with one away in the sixth, and followed by walking Pierre, but retired the next two batters.

Detroit then tacked on three more runs in the bottom half, starting with Miguel Cabrera's RBI double. Raburn hit a sacrifice fly with a bases loaded and one down, and Peralta followed with an RBI single.

Raburn's eighth-inning single plated the game's final run.

Game Notes

Morel had two of Chicago's five hits...The White Sox left nine on base...Avila's triple was the first of his 149-game career.

(Sports Network) - Brad Penny's first stint with the Detroit Tigers hasn't gone so well and he will get the nod this afternoon versus the Chicago White Sox in the second meeting of a three-game series at Comerica Park.

Penny is 0-2 with an 8.44 earned run average in four starts in his new digs and lasted just five innings in Sunday's 5-1 loss at Oakland. He allowed all five runs and four hits in five innings of work, while striking out five batters and issuing four walks.

The bulky right-hander, who was limited to nine starts a year ago with St. Louis, hasn't tasted victory since last April 25 at San Francisco. Penny has never faced the White Sox in his career.

Detroit hopes Penny's initial encounter with the Pale Hose is a good one, as it's coming off Friday's 9-3 triumph in the series opener. Ryan Raburn hit a two-run homer and finished with four RBI, while Casper Wells added two hits and two runs batted in for the Tigers, winners in two straight and seven of 10 games.

Tigers starter Justin Verlander fanned eight batters to reach 1,000 career strikeouts while allowing three runs -- all on solo homers -- and four hits over seven innings.

"I felt like I had good control of everything," Verlander said. "If you're going to give up homers, give up solo homers. That's what I did. Our guys put up runs to allow me to be a little more aggressive."

The Tigers have won seven straight and nine of the past 10 games against the White Sox. They're also unbeaten in three straight at home.

Chicago got two home runs from Carlos Quentin and a solo shot out of Paul Konerko in last night's loss. Quentin and Konerko clubbed back-to-back home runs in the seventh inning for the White Sox, who have lost eight of nine games and fell to 1-4 on a lengthy 11-game road trip.

White Sox starter Mark Buehrle was tagged for six runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to absorb the loss.

"It's too early to be worried," Buehrle said about the White Sox's struggles. "We haven't been hitting well or pitching well. Things just aren't clicking right now."

Edwin Jackson's first full season with the White Sox seems to be clicking, as he sports a 2-1 mark and 3.51 ERA in four outings. He will take the ball this afternoon.

However, Jackson dropped his last start in Monday's 5-0 blanking at the hands of the Tampa Bay Rays, who reached Jackson for a season-high four runs and 11 hits in seven innings.

Jackson, a right-hander and former Tiger, is 3-1 with a 3.33 ERA in nine career games (7 starts) against Detroit.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Justin Verlander reached a career milestone in a seven-inning start as the Detroit Tigers continued their recent dominance of the divisional-rival Chicago White Sox with a 9-3 win to open a three-game set.

Verlander (2-2) fanned eight batters to reach 1,000 career strikeouts while allowing three runs -- all on solo homers -- and four hits in the quality start.

Ryan Raburn knocked in four runs while Casper Wells drove in a pair for the Tigers, who have won seven straight and nine of the past 10 games against the White Sox. Detroit earned its second straight win overall.

Carlos Quentin had a pair of home runs while Paul Konerko added a solo shot for the White Sox, who had snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 9-2 win in Tampa Bay on Thursday.

Mark Buehrle (1-2) was touched for six runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings to take the loss for the visitors.

The Tigers got after Buehrle early with two runs in the second inning. Miguel Cabrera led off the with a single and scored on Jhonny Peralta's triple to center, where Alex Rios' failed diving attempt allowed the ball roll to the fence. Brennan Boesch then lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Peralta.

Detroit put up another two-spot in the third, sparked by Austin Jackson's one- out double off the right-field wall. The next batter, Raburn, hit near the same area but this time the ball barely cleared the fence for a two-run homer and a 4-0 lead.

Verlander was cruising to start the game, retiring the first 11 batters he faced. But he served Quentin an elevated fastball that was belted over the left fence to break up the perfect game and put Chicago on the board in the fourth frame.

The run was taken back by the Tigers during the bottom of the inning on Alex Avila's ground-rule double into deep left center, allowing Boesch to trot home.

Another run was tacked on for the home team when Avila, who doubled, scored on Casper Wells' single in the sixth.

During the seventh, Quentin got the best of Verlander again with another solo shot into the left-field seats, making it a 6-2 contest. The Tigers' ace surrendered another homer to the next batter, Konerko, on a towering fly ball that hooked into the right foul pole.

Verlander fanned A.J. Pierzynski to end the seventh and get his 1,000th strikeout and the Detroit bullpen did its part to seal the win.

Joaquin Benoit allowed just one hit in the eighth and the Tigers added three runs with two outs in the bottom of the inning on Wells' RBI single and Raburn's two-run base knock to make up the final score.

Detroit closer Jose Valverde came in to throw a shutout ninth inning to ice the game.

The start of the game was delayed 12 minutes because of rain...Verlander is the 15th pitcher in Tigers history to record 1,000 strikeouts...All nine Tigers starters reached base safely...Boesch has reached safely in 11 consecutive games...Quentin's homer was the first visitors' home run in Comerica Park this season.

Justin Verlander's eighth strikeout tonight against the Chicago White Sox marked a milestone for the 28-year-old flamethrower -- his 1,000th career strikeout. Verlander's final pitch of the night -- his 117th -- got the hated A.J. Pierzynski swinging and added his name to the list of 444 other pitchers who have struck out 1,000 hitters throughout the course of their careers.

Verlander entered the game with 992 career strikeouts, 450th on the all-time strikeouts list. In tonight's game, he passed -- in order -- Joe Dobson, Scott Kazmir, Joel Pineiro, Sterling Hitchcock, Bill Lee, Bob Ewing, and Joey Jay. Verlander is now tied with Ralph Terry and Tom Browning.

Assuming Verlander strikes out 200-plus again this year, he could see himself jump all the way into the top 300 by season's end. Brad Penny is currently sitting at No. 306 all-time with 1,189 career strikeouts. Verlander is, oh, just 4,714 K's away from Nolan Ryan, who sits atop the list.

(Sports Network) - The Detroit Tigers have a good shot at extending their winning streak against the AL Central-rival Chicago White Sox to seven games with ace Justin Verlander set to take the hill Friday in the opener of a three-game series.

The Tigers have won six straight and eight of the past nine meetings with Chicago, and will begin a six-game homestand at Comerica Park tonight. They won 10 of the 18 contests against Chicago a season ago and just went 4-3 on a seven-game trip culminated with Wednesday's 3-2 win at Seattle.

Ryan Raburn homered and both Miguel Cabrera and Brennan Boesch knocked in a run for Detroit, which got 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball out of winning starter Rick Porcello. Porcello also fanned six batters and walked one for his first win of the 2011 campaign.

"Winning road trip, so that was a huge win for us," said Detroit manager Jim Leyland. "We could've done a little better, but to win the road trip, I'll take it right now.

"We're still getting guys going and some guys aren't hitting yet, but I'll take that, that was a big win."

Leyland's club is slated to welcome the Mariners to the Motor City for three games after hosting the White Sox, and will hand the ball to Verlander tonight. The hard-throwing righty and early favorite for the AL's Cy Young Award is just 1-2 with a 3.41 earned run average in four starts and has dropped back-to-back trips to the rubber.

Verlander was recently beaten by Oakland last Saturday, as he allowed four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in six innings. He went the distance in a loss versus Texas the start before on April 11. He has made 19 starts in his career against the Pale Hose, going 7-9 with a 4.55 ERA.
