The Tigers swept the White Sox out of town and dealt a devastating blow to their chances in the Central Division race with an 18-2 shellacking on Sunday at Comerica Park.

Detroit got to Chicago starter Mark Buehrle (11-7) early and often, chasing him in the fourth inning after he gave up eight runs -- seven earned -- on 10 hits.

Max Scherzer (14-8) pitched well for the Tigers despite having to sit for extended periods of time due to the amount of runs being scored. He finished with a five-hitter in seven innings of work with six strikeouts.

Detroit tacked on five runs in the fourth inning to what was already a 4-0 lead, then added nine more in the sixth -- highlighted by a monster two-run homer to dead center by Miguel Cabrera. In total, Detroit scored 26 unanswered runs on White Sox pitching over the last 14 innings of the series after erasing an 8-1 deficit on Saturday.

In lieu of recounting every single run, here's a condensed box score of the hit parade:

Austin Jackson went 2-for-5 and scored three runs. His average is all the way up to .261 now.

Alex Avila went 4-for-6 with two RBIs and also scored twice.

Andy Dirks came on late as a replacement for Delmon Young and went 2-for-2, including a two-run homer in the eighth.

Victor Martinez was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.

Brandon Inge was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI. Watch out .200, here he comes!

Jhonny Peralta, Cabrera, Jackson and Avila all hit doubles.

Detroit had 24 total hits for the game and outscored Chicago 35-11 for the series.

AL Central Standings:
Detroit 78-62
Cleveland 6.5 GB
Chicago 8.5 GB
Minnesota 19.5 GB
Kansas City 20.5 GB

(Sports Network) - With another victory tonight, the Tigers can essentially turn the American League Central into a two-horse race.

The White Sox have no one to blame but themselves.

Detroit seeks to sweep Chicago out of Motown tonight and deal another blow to the Pale Hose's playoff chances in the finale of a three-game series.

The first-place Tigers have done their best to prevent the White Sox from closing ground in the division race by personally taking care of business in this series. Detroit has won nine of 14 over Chicago this season, including six of eight at Comerica Park.

The Tigers have won 17 of their last 23 versus the White Sox dating back to last season.

Chicago seemed poised to make up some ground on Saturday night, holding a seven-run lead after five innings. Detroit, though, clawed its way back before getting to White Sox closer Sergio Santos for three runs in the ninth inning on a pair of clutch homers.

Ryan Raburn tied the game with a two-run shot and Miguel Cabrera smacked the game-winning, walk-off homer two batters later for a 9-8 win. Coupled with Cleveland's loss to Kansas City, the Tigers upped their edge over the Indians in the AL Central to 6 1/2 games, while the White Sox fell 7 1/2 games off the pace.

Detroit will visit Cleveland for three games starting on Monday and has one series left versus the White Sox, a three-game set at Chicago from Sept. 12-14.

"Every game is huge, every win is huge. We have to go out there and try to finish the job," said Cabrera, who has reached base safely in 30 consecutive games.

Alexei Ramirez hit a three-run homer to help the White Sox race out to their early advantage before Santos suffered his fourth loss of the season and fifth blown save.

"You feel like you let the 24 other guys on your team down," Santos said. "They busted their tails and played really well, so to go in there and mess up that one inning, it's tough."

The White Sox could have the right man on the mound tonight to avoid the sweep, with streaking southpaw Mark Buehrle set for the start. He has posted a victory in five of his past six decisions while losing just once in 12 starts since June 21.

Buehrle hurled 7 2/3 scoreless innings to beat the Twins on Monday, scattering four hits -- all singles -- and two walks while striking out four. He improved to 11-6 with a 3.05 earned run average on the season.

"One game at a time," said Buehrle of his team's mentality following the victory. "We can't get too far ahead. We've got a couple more games with Detroit and they're not going away and I think they know we're not going to."

The 32-year-old will make his fourth start of the year against the rival Tigers and is 2-1 with a 4.58 ERA in the season series thus far. He did beat them in the last meeting on July 25, yielding two unearned runs over six innings.

Location doomed Max Scherzer in his last start and the right-hander will hope to have better luck this evening for the Tigers.

Scherzer was pounded for seven runs on 10 hits, including three homers, over three-plus innings of a setback to the Royals on Monday. He gave up six hits with two strikes as he failed to put away hitters and fell to 13-8 with a 4.52 ERA on the season.

"When you don't locate your fastball that's where it all starts," manager Jim Leyland said. "There's a difference between throwing for a strike and throwing for a quality strike. Obviously, Scherzer didn't do that tonight."

Luck hasn't been on the 27-year-old's side in his career versus the White Sox. Despite a lifetime 2.61 ERA in seven starts against them, he is just 2-3. He came up on the short end of a 2-1 defeat back on July 27, yielding both runs over six innings.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) – Ryan Raburn tied the game with a two-run homer and Miguel Cabrera smacked the game-winner two batters later in the bottom of the ninth, as Detroit battled back for a 9-8 victory over Chicago in the middle portion of a three-game set.

Luis Marte (1-0) tossed a scoreless top of the ninth to earn the win. Brad Penny started and allowed eight runs — four earned — on 10 hits and a walk in five innings for Detroit, a winner in four of its last five games.

Sergio Santos (3-4) allowed the game-deciding runs in the ninth to take the loss. Gavin Floyd allowed four runs on eight hits through five innings in his start for Chicago. He did not issue a walk and struck out four.

Alexei Ramirez hit a three-run home run as the White Sox dropped their third straight contest and fell 7 1/2 games behind division-leading Detroit.

Santos fanned Wilson Betemit to start the ninth, but then allowed a triple into left by Austin Jackson. Raburn stepped up next and blasted an inside slider over the left-field wall, tying the game.

After a Delmon Young strikeout, Cabrera launched a first-pitch, low-and-inside slider into the seats in left, capping an eight-run comeback. The White Sox held an 8-1 lead after five innings.

An A.J. Pierzynski sacrifice fly to left brought home Ramirez from third in the top of the first, but the Tigers answered with a Cabrera RBI double off the top of the wall in right in the home half.

Chicago tacked on five runs in the fourth, which Dayan Viciedo and Alex Rios began with back-to-back singles. Two batters later, an error by Tigers second baseman Carlos Guillen allowed Brent Morel to reach, filling the bases. Gordon Beckham followed with a base hit to right, scoring Viciedo.

Juan Pierre then hit a grounder to first. Cabrera fielded the ball and threw to home for the force out, but Alex Avila’s throw back to first was wide and Morel was able to score on the throwing error. Ramirez then pulled a ball over the left-field wall, putting the White Sox ahead 6-1.

Back-to-back solo homers by Alejandro De Aza and Morel in the fifth extended Chicago’s lead.

But Detroit began to fight back in the bottom of the fifth. Jackson’s triple brought Guillen across the plate, and Young’s shot into the left-field bleachers made the score 8-4.

Betemit smacked a homer in the seventh and Jhonny Peralta singled in Victor Martinez in the eighth to make it a two-run game, setting up the Tigers’ last- inning rally.

Chicago activated pitcher Philip Humber off the 15-day disabled list Saturday…Detroit has won 17 of its last 23 games vs. Chicago…Jackson extended his hit streak against Chicago to 14 games…Cabrera has reached base safely in 30 straight games.

Justin Verlander did it again.

Another losing streak for the Detroit Tigers was averted thanks to their pitching ace, who tossed 7 1/3 innings in an 8-1 rout of Chicago.

Verlander (21-5) struck out six batters and gave up seven hits for Detroit, who lost yesterday to Kansas City. Verlander is now 15-3 in games after a Tigers loss.

White Sox starter John Danks (6-10) couldn’t make it past the fifth inning after giving up eight runs on nine hits.

Detroit got all the help they needed in the first inning. Delmon Young hit a booming triple to center field that scored Austin Jackson for the game’s first run. Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila followed with RBI singles that staked Detroit to an early 3-0 lead.

The White Sox didn’t get to Verlander until the eighth when Tyler Flowers hit a solo home run to lead off the inning. Verlander would end up loading the bases in the frame, but Joaquin Benoit retired two consecutive batters to get out of the jam.

Daniel Schlereth worked around a one-out walk in the ninth to close the game. The Tigers’ lead over Chicago in the AL Central increased to 6 1/2 games.

Justin Verlander takes the hill tonight looking for his 21st win as the Tigers open a crucial three-game set with the White Sox.

Justin Verlander gets another one of those starts after a Tigers loss tonight when he goes for his 21st win against the Chicago White Sox at Comerica Park.

Verlander (20-5) got his 20th win Aug. 27 in Minnesota, becoming the first pitcher this season to do so, but it didn't come easy. Verlander gave up four runs in six innings, one of his shortest outings of the season, but his offense picked up him up with a 6-4 win.

He'll make his 20th start of the season following a Tigers loss after the Kansas City Royals overcame a late deficit yesterday to win, 11-8. Verlander is 14-3 in such games this season.

Tonight he'll face off against John Danks (6-9) who has rebounded from a shaky start to his season. The White Sox have won the last four games he's started, which included a three-hit complete game on Aug. 27 against Seattle, a 3-0 win.

The first-place Tigers lead both Chicago and Cleveland by 5 1/2 games in the AL Central division. Detroit has lost three of its last five games after winning eight of its previous nine contests.
