Thanks to the rain that came through New York on Friday night, Game 1 of the ALDS between the Tigers and Yankees took more than a day to complete. The first inning and a half saw the two teams each score a run before play was suspended. Once the action resumed on Saturday night, the Yankees took over and dominated the Tigers en route to a 9-3 victory.

Doug Fister took the hill for the Tigers in place of Justin Verlander and quickly found himself in some trouble. He was able to get out of the jam and settled down nicely, and even though he allowed a run in the fifth on a Robinson Cano double that almost left the park, Fister seemed to be pitching quite well.

Things fell apart for the Tigers in the sixth inning. First Brett Gardner singled in Mark Teixeira and Jorge Posada, and then Fister left the game with the bases loaded. Al Alburquerque came in and needed just one out to escape the jam. Unfortunately, the out came after Cano hit a 375-foot grand slam to right field. The Yankees took an 8-1 lead, and they ended up scoring a ninth run on a Cano double in the eighth.

The Tigers' offense was shut down by CC Sabathia's replacement, Ivan Nova, for the most part. Nova allowed only four hits, and only twice did the Tigers threaten against him. Detroit put something together in the top of the fifth with Alex Avila being walked, Ryan Raburn getting a single and Jhonny Peralta singling to center. Unfortunately, no runs were scored thanks to Gene Lamont waving Avila home on Peralta's single. Avila was tagged out, and that was the last we heard from the Tigers' offense until the ninth inning.

In the ninth, the Tigers loaded the bases and forced Nova out of the game. Luis Ayala came in and allowed a pair of the inherited runners to score before he was pulled. Mariano Rivera entered the game with the bases loaded and finished things off with a three-pitch strikeout.

As bad as the Saturday section of Game 1 went for the Tigers, the good news is it's only one loss. In 2006, the Tigers lost by a score of 8-4 in Game 1 of the ALDS against the Yankees, and they went on to win three straight games against the Yankees and four straight against the Oakland Athletics in the ALCS. Obviously I'm not saying that will happen this year, but at the very least there's no need to panic after one rough game.

The Tigers will try to rebound on Sunday in Game 2 of the ALDS. Max Scherzer will take the hill for the Tigers and Freddy Garcia will get the start for the Yankees. First pitch is scheduled for 3:07 p.m.

5th inning Live Tigers diary continues:

9:20 p.m.: On a 0-1 pitch, Martin calls for an up-and-in pitch and Nova goes behind Martinez.

9:22 p.m.: Nova was all over the place, but he gets Martinez swinging on the sixth pitch of the at bat.

9:24 p.m.: Avila works the count full.

9:25 p.m.: Nova’s 3-2 change goes in the dirt and bounces up underneath Martin’s right arm and nails HP ump Tony Randazzo in the right jaw. Randazzo went down and was checked on by the Yankees athletic trainer, but he’ll stay in the game. I thought he may have broken his jaw or — worse — swallowed the wad of chew he has in his mouth.

9:27 p.m.: Raburn singles to right on the first pitch. I had a feeling Avila’s walk might calm the Tigers’ hitters down a little bit.

9:29 p.m.: Peralta singles to center and the human windmill waves Avila home. Granderson-Jeter gun him out at the plate. Terrible call by Lamont, but not a very good slide/plow job by Avila, either.

9:30 p.m.: Leyland pinch hits Betemit for Inge with two on in scoring position and two out.

9:31 p.m.: Betemit falls behind 0-2 and then hits his 9-iron to left center for a routine grab for Granderson. It’s a sac fly had Lamont not been greedy with Avila the play before. Tigers have a hand in Yankees escaping a jam of their own.

Bottom 5

9:35 p.m.: Fister’s curve ball is starting out of the zone high and finishing out of the zone low. It’s pretty nasty, but falls behind 2-1 to Gardner.

9:36 p.m.: Gardner hits a routine fly ball to right field, but at Yankee Stadium it’s scary. Ordonez grabs it for the out at the warning track.

9:37 p.m.: Betemit is tested at third base on a groundball from Derek Jeter, but he makes the play with ease. Two away.

9:38 p.m.: Granderson singles to right on an 0-1 pitch.

9:40 p.m.: Cano goes oppo and hits one off the top of the wall in left, which looks like a homer. It’s an RBI double, but will be reviewed after an argument from Girardi.

9:43 p.m.: We are still in a review even though it looks pretty clear that it’s NOT a home run. Cano thinks it was a home run, though, of course.

9:44 p.m.: Apparently the dispute is whether or not it hit off a Yankees’ fan in a hoodie before it went back into the field of play.

9:44 p.m.: It’s ruled NOT a home run.

9:45 p.m.: A-Rod hits a routine fly ball to Jackson on the first pitch that gets the fans unreasonably excited.

4th inning live diary updates continue as Magglio Ordonez steps into the box:

9:03 p.m.: Magglio grounds out to Jeter on the 6th pitch of the at bat.

9:05 p.m.: Delmon Young hits a lazy fly ball on the second pitch of the at bat to Nick Swisher in right for the second out of the inning.

9:05 p.m.: Two relatively easy outs and now Miguel Cabrera is coming to the plate. That could mean mistake time, which Cabrera will take full advantage of.

9:06 p.m.: Cabrera swings and misses at ball three on the 2-1 pitch. 2-2.

9:06 p.m.: Cabrera swings and misses at a slider in the dirt for out number three. Another 1-2-3 inning for Nova.

Bottom 4

9:10 p.m.: Fister vs. Swisher. Sounds like a cool match up.

9:11 p.m.: Swisher swinging so hard he might swallow his chew, grounds out to Cabrera at first. Swisher looks like he was getting chatty with someone on the Tigers as he jogged off the field. Perhaps Cabrera?

9:14 p.m.: Fister racks up strikeout number five, getting Posada to swing at a nasty curve in the dirt. Avila completes the out by throwing down to Cabrera.

9:14 p.m.: Russell Martin squares to bunt on the first pitch and Fister’s fastball coincidentally rises up and in. Martin eats dirt.

9:15 p.m.: Fister goes back up and in a couple pitches later, which causes Martin to check his swing and fall backwards into Avila.

9:16 p.m.: Martin likes to check swing like Inge.

9:16 p.m.: On cue, Martin takes a full hack and grounds out to Inge. Another 1-2-3 for Fister, too.

The Tigers went down just as easily in the top of the 3rd inning to Ivan Nova as they did in the 2nd inning to CC Sabathia.

Nova needed just eight pitches to retire Jhonny Peralta, Brandon Inge, and Austin Jackson (ground out, pop out, line out, respectively).

In the bottom half, Robinson Cano started the inning off by ground out to Ryan Raburn. Cano hit one deep down the right field line that would’ve been a home run, but it was foul.

For the rest of the updates, I’m going to be doing live blog bang, live diary like:

8:58 p.m.: Doug Fister just finished carving up Alex Rodriguez on a foul tip strikeout. TBS shows the sequence and it looked awesome.

8:59 p.m.: It only took three pitches and sixty seconds to do the same to Mark Teixeira. 1-2-3 for Fister after his rocky first inning.

Magglio Ordonez leads off the top of the 4th inning for the Tigers.

Doug Fister got off to a sluggish start in the bottom of the 2nd inning (it sounds and was weird to see the Tigers start off in the field at Yankee Stadium), allowing consecutive hits to Jorge Posada just over the glove of Ryan Raburn at second and then a double to Russell Martin. Things looked as ominous as the weather in NYC the past couple nights with two runners in scoring position and nobody out.

However, Fister settle down. He induced a grounder to Brandon Inge, who was in at third. Inge was able to catch Posada cheating toward home and run at him for the first out of the inning.

After a balk that took away a double play, Fister then struck out Jeter and Granderson to end the inning and escape the jam.

Ivan Nova will take the mound for the Yankees in the top of the 3rd inning for the Yankees. The score is tied 1-1.

OK, let’s try this again.

After Game 1 of the ALDS between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees was rained out in the middle of the second inning Friday night, the two teams resume play from where the game was suspended on Saturday. The score was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the second.

The Game 1 starting pitchers — Justin Verlander for the Tigers and CC Sabathia for the Yankees — won’t be pitching when play resumes since they pitched on Friday. That pushes the original Game 2 starters up to pitch on Saturday. Doug Fister takes the mound for Detroit, while Ivan Nova goes for the Yankees.

Fister has three career starts against the Yankees, compiling a 1-2 record and 6.00 ERA. He faced the Yankees once this season while with the Seattle Mariners and allowed three runs in seven innings. Nova did not face the Tigers during the regular season.

One difference for the Tigers in this resumed Game 1 is that Jim Leyland originally put together a lineup to face the left-handed Sabathia and can’t make the changes he normally would with Nova now pitching.

That leaves Ryan Raburn and Brandon Inge in the lineup when Ramon Santiago and Wilson Betemit would normally start at second base and third base, respectively, against a right-hander.

Via MLive.com, here are the current lineups, with their batting lines against tonight’s starting pitchers:

Detroit Tigers
1. Austin Jackson, CF: 0-for-1
2. Magglio Ordonez, RF: 1-for-1
3. Delmon Young, LF: 1-for-3
6. Alex Avila, C
7. Ryan Raburn, 2B
8. Jhonny Peralta, SS
9. Brandon Inge, 3B

New York Yankees
1. Derek Jeter, SS: 4-for-10
6. Nick Swisher, RF: 2-for-7, 1 HR

After approximately 90 minutes of rain delay, Major League Baseball decided to postpone Game 1 of the American League Divisional Series between the Detroit Tigers and New York Yankees.

The game was tied 1-1 after the top of the second inning. That’s where play will resume on Saturday night at 8:37 p.m. ET. Game 2 of the series has been pushed to Sunday, with first pitch set for 3:07 p.m.

Even if the rain that initially postponed the game had cleared up, reports had a heavier system coming into the area around midnight. At best, three or four innings could’ve been played. After VP of Baseball Operations Joe Torre spoke with the general managers of both teams, the decision was made to postpone the game.

But the matchup between Justin Verlander and CC Sabathia has been wiped out by the rain and it’s likely we’ll now see each pitcher only once in this series. When Game 1 resumes on Saturday at Yankee Stadium, Doug Fister will pitch for the Tigers while Ivan Nova goes for the Yankees.

Max Scherzer will now start Game 2 of the ALDS with Verlander coming back for Game 3. Rick Porcello will pitch Game 4 as scheduled and Fister will pitch Game 5, if necessary.

There were rumblings that Sabathia might return to pitch on Sunday, but that wasn’t the rotation announced by the Yankees. Freddy Garcia will pitch Game 2, with Sabathia coming back on Monday for Game 3. It’s unclear who will start Games 4 and 5 since the Yankees opted for a three-man rotation. A.J. Burnett could start Game 4, with Nova returning for Game 5.

Rain is also in the forecast for Saturday, which would obviously complicate matters. That would create the possibility of a doubleheader to be played on Sunday. More likely would be playing on Thursday, originally scheduled to be an off-day.

UPDATE: MLB has announced that no doubleheaders will be played in the ALDS under any circumstances. As Bud Selig says it is, so shall it be.

With the rain still coming down pretty hard, CC Sabathia made quick work of the Tigers in the top of the 2nd inning. Unfortunately, Justin Verlander couldn’t return to the mound in the bottom half to do the same because of a rain delay being called.

After a Victor Martinez ground out to Alex Rodriguez, Sabathia struck out Alex Avila and Ryan Raburn on nine pitches, taking advantage of the pouring rain obscuring the vision of the Tigers’ hitters. After the inning, the umpires decided it was time to put the tarp on the field and delay the game.

At first thought, it seemed sketchy because of how it was decided after an inning by Sabathia before Verlander could get back out there. But Sabathia did slip on his last pitch and I think the Tigers would rather Verlander not pitch on a dangerous, slippery hill. Either way, the game probably should’ve been called after the first inning, as it was clearly down pouring.

The forecast appears to be clearing up soon, but there’s supposedly an even heavier rainfall on its way for after midnight, so this one needs to start back up again here soon.
