Five-star shooting guard Gary Harris committed to the Michigan State Spartans today over the likes of Purdue, Kentucky and Indiana. The top-rated shooting guard in the country in the Class of 2012 according to ESPN gushed about the culture at Michigan State, and most of all, coach Tom Izzo.

"Me and my family, we just decided tonight," Harris said. "All the schools had the same thing but it came down to the school I was most comfortable with. The family atmosphere (at Michigan State) was like no other. The way they treat each other and act and get along -- it's a great feeling."

Harris said coach Tom Izzo was one of the main reasons he chose Michigan State.

"He comes at me like a father figure," Harris said. "The respect that he has from everyone, his players, the people outside the program; he's a great guy and a guy that you would want to be around."

While Harris will not join the Spartans until next season, Michigan State opens its season this week against the NCAA's top-ranked team, North Carolina, on Nov. 11 in the Carrier Classic in San Diego, California.

Much was made last week about Michigan picking up Mitch McGary, one of the top players in the nation for 2012. The reason it was so newsworthy is because Michigan isn't used to landing five-star players in basketball. Michigan State, on the other hand, has grown accustomed to picking up commits from big-time players, and the Spartans added another one on Wednesday night.

Gary Harris, a five-star shooting guard from Indiana, picked Michigan State on Wednesday over schools like Indiana, Purdue and Kentucky. The Spartans were hoping to add him as the last piece of their outstanding 2012 recruiting class, and he made the decision official on Wednesday, according to Scout's Brian Snow.

Harris is a five-star guard on Rivals, Scout and ESPN. Rivals ranks him as the third best shooting guard in the nation and the 25th overall player. Scout is even higher on Harris, ranking him second at his position. ESPN is the most impressed with Harris, ranking him as the best shooting guard, the second best player in Indiana and the 10th best player in the nation.

With Harris on board for 2012, Michigan State now has the No. 3 recruiting class on ESPN. That should come as no surprise considering the other three players in the class -- Denzel Valentine, Matt Costello and Kenny Kaminski -- are all four-star recruits. They signed with MSU earlier in the day to make their commitments official (they all originally committed to MSU back in the summer of 2010).

It seems like Michigan State has been getting a football or basketball commit just about every day for the last week or so, and that trend continued today with Denzel Valentine verballing to the Spartans.
↵
↵
Valentine, a 6-foot-5 junior guard, verbally committed to MSU men’s basketball coach Tom Izzo this morning. He picked the Spartans over Michigan, Georgetown and Oakland, and will officially sign a letter of intent a year from this fall.

Valentine’s father and high school coach, Carlton Valentine, was a standout for MSU two decades ago.
↵
↵
As soon as Valentine picked up an offer from MSU recently, it looked like his recruitment was soon going to come to an end. As it turns out, that is exactly what happened. Valentine got his offer from MSU and is now the second member of the class of 2012, joining Kenny Kaminski, who committed at the end of last month.
↵
For more on Valentine and the Spartans' 2012 recruiting class, check out The Only Colors.

Branden Dawson wasn't the only basketball recruit to commit to Michigan State this week. In fact, in the last week or so, the Spartans have picked up quite a few commits for both basketball and football, and the Wolverines also added a football recruit.
