The Detroit Pistons have signed 2011 second-round draft pick Kyle Singler to a multi-year contract, according to the team's official Twitter account. Singler spent the 2011-12 season playing in Spain for his first year as a professional, playing with Lucentum Alicante and Real Madrid. His stats were pretty good, averaging 14.4 points, 3.8 rebounds and 31.1 minutes with the former and 7.9 points, 2.7 rebounds and 20.3 minutes in 46 games with the latter.

Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars released a statement on the signing, as per the Detroit Free Press:

"We are pleased to have Kyle Singler join our organization knowing he brings great character and skill to our team," Pistons president of basketball operations Joe Dumars said in a released statement. "We watched him grow as a player throughout his season in Spain last year, and we feel he's going to be a great addition to our roster going forward."

Singler was taken with the 33rd pick in the second round in 2011. He's 6-foot-8 and should be able to find some playing time with the team initially off the bench. Detroit is eager to get young talent on the court sooner rather than later, and Singler impressed in the team's summer league opener. Singler had 14 points (going 6-for-8) in the opener against the Jazz.

After opting to play his first year of professional basketball overseas in Spain, former Detroit Pistons second round pick Kyle Singler is ready to join a lockout-free NBA, and the team expects to sign him on July 11 according to the Associated Press' Larry Lage.

Singler tallied 8.0 points per game over just 19.8 minutes per night with Real Madrid in Spain this past year, and continues to hold no regrets about his decision to spurn the league last summer. A complete all-around talent with an impressive 6'8" frame, Singler's 43.1% three-point number through 36 games also offers a nice glimpse of his perimeter shooting ability.

Assuming everything goes to plan and Dumars is able to sign him in the coming weeks, Singler would join a promising 2012 rookie class that includes Connecticut center Andre Drummond, Texas A&M forward Khris Middleton and Missouri guard Kim English.

Kyle Singler was one of the better American players to play in Europe during the NBA lockout as the Duke Blue Devils rookie averaged 15 points and led his club to a 6-3 record in the ultra-competitive Spanish league. The Detroit Pistons second round pick has apparently decided to stay in Spain even now that the lockout is over, however, as he's reportedly on the verge of signing with Real Madrid.

Singler will sign a $900,000 contract with the top Spanish club as a replacement for fellow NBA player Rudy Fernandez, according to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports. Wojnarowski reports that "a combination of his comfort level in Spain and a salary higher than that of most second-round draft picks convinced him to finish the season there."

For comparison's sake, last season's 33rd overall pick -- Hassan Whiteside of the Sacramento Kings -- played for $730,437 during his rookie season. The majority of European contracts are tax-free, too, only helping that argument.

With Real Madrid, Singler will join a team that includes fellow American Jaycee Carroll, former NBA players Sergio Rodriguez and NBA draft picks Ante Tomic and Sergio Llull. The team is tied for first in the ACB with an 8-1 record.

As the lockout carries on with no end in sight, All-Star guard Deron Williams was one of the first NBA players to sign a contract with a team overseas, signing a one-year deal with Besiktas in Turkey. Since then, several others have joined him in signing with teams overseas in lieu of training in the U.S. in anticipation of the lockout ending and an NBA season happening sooner rather than later.
↵
The Pistons' 2nd round draft pick in the 2011 draft, Kyle Singler, has also agreed to terms with a team overseas. Singler signed a reported one-year deal with Lucentum Alicante in Spain. The deal has an opt-out clause that will allow Singler to return to the Pistons should the NBA lockout end.
↵
DaJuan Summers, who was a 2nd round draft pick by the Pistons in 2009 and is currently a free agent, also signed a deal overseas. He inked a two-year deal with an opt-out clause after one year, so he will have a tougher time playing in the NBA this season if the lockout ends.
↵
Meanwhile, Austin Daye and Tayshaun Prince are considering playing in the Las Vegas Summer Impact League.
