For the first time this season, the Michigan Wolverines were pushed to overtime, but for the 14th time this season, they prevailed, topping the Northwestern Wildcats 66-64 at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor on Wednesday night.

After Tim Hardaway Jr. hit a three-pointer to tie the game 54-54 with 2:44 in regulation, neither team scored again, leading to overtime, where Trey Burke scored 8 points to help lead the Wolverines.

Until Burke got going in extra time, Hardaway had just about the only hot hand for Michigan, as he made 5-9 three pointers and finished with 19 points along with 7 rebounds.

John Shurna (21) and Drew Crawford (20) meanwhile combined for 41 of Northwestern's 64 points.

With the win, the Wolverines improve to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats fall to 11-4 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.

Michigan now has a couple days off before traveling to face the 10-8 Iowa Hawkeyes on Saturday. After that, they return home for a big game against in-state rival and No. 7 Michigan St. Spartans, 15-2 overall and 4-0 in the Big Ten.

The Michigan Wolverines are just one game back of their Big Ten rivals, Michigan State, and most definitely need to defend home court on Wednesday when they play host to the Northwestern Wildcats. A strong home record is what generally leads to a conference championship, but Northwestern is generally the team that gets in the way of said home records.

Michigan should be extremely confident coming off of their dominant victory over the Wisconsin Badgers. Michigan held them to a season-wrost 31.4 percent from the field in that game. They've won 11 consecutive games at home, and the Wildcats have lost nine-straight on the road against ranked opponents. At home, the Wolverines are winning by an average of 15.2 points, while the Wildcats haven't beaten a top 25 team on the road since March 4, 2009 when they beat the Purdue Boilermakers 64-61. Below is the TV times and the like.

The Big Ten champion is usually one that has the best home record in the league while stealing enough games on the road for the title. it is no coincidence that Ohio State and Purdue, the top two finishers in last year's race, were unbeaten on their home floors.

The Michigan Wolverines are only one game behind rival Michigan State in the Big Ten title hunt so far, and tonight they have a critical home game against a Northwestern team looking for a signature road win. The Wildcats are attempting to end their famous drought without an NCAA Tournament appearance, and the Wolverines are a team coming off of a dominant win over Wisconsin:

Wisconsin is reeling, and don't get me wrong, they played terribly, but this was a phenomenal performance for Michigan. The Badgers weathered a 10-2 Michigan run to open the game to draw within six at halftime (interestingly, Wisconsin's run coincided with the first half absence of Jordan Morgan with foul trouble, they were able to take advantage of Evan Smotrycz and Blake McLimans down low).
