The Detroit Red Wings moved into first place in the Western Conference on Tuesday night with a 3-2 shootout win over the Dallas Stars, taking a slim one point advantage on their division rivals, the St. Louis Blues and Chicago Blackhawks.

Trailing 2-1 in the third period, it took less than two minutes for Jiri Hudler to tie the game. After the next 43 minutes went scoreless, Hudler found the net again in the shootout in Zetterberg-like fashion.

Hudler's fantastic shootout goal was the only goal in the post-OT fun, as Ty Conklin saved all three shots he faced (with a little help from the post on the first). Stars' goalie Richard Bachman, who was making his first NHL shootout appearance, got a little help from the post, too, on Pavel Datsyuk's attempt, and saved Todd Bertuzzi's straight up slap shot to keep it alive for Trevor Daley and the Stars. Daley and Dallas was denied by Conklin, though.

In addition to the shootout shots, Conklin made 25 saves on 27 shots, including a huge save as time expired in the second period. It was a nice bounce back game for him after giving up five goals to the Islanders on January 10. It was his third win of the season.

The Red Wings go to Phoenix for another game with the Coyotes on Thursday.

For more on the Detroit Red Wings, check out Winging It In Motown.

The Detroit Red Wings are 2-3 in their last five road games, but have an opportunity to pick up a good win on Tuesday as they take on the Dallas Stars, who the Red Wings beat on the road earlier this month. Either way, the Red Wings are winners in their last three games, all of them at home, out-scoring their opponents 11-4 over that period of time, including a 5-0 shutout of the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.

Dallas is reeling, having lost two straight and being unable to put together a solid winning streak since Dec. 10, when they won three games over a five-day span. That was their high point, sitting at or near the top of the Pacific Division, but they've since gone on to lose sporadically and underwhelm. One thing they've generally been able to do is put points up on the board, something the Red Wings haven't had a problem with, either.

The key to this one will clearly be to get ahead fast. Of course that's what you want to do in every game, but the best way to weaken an offense is to give them an uphill climb. Detroit should also be confident, having taken both of the meetings between these two teams this season. This will be the third of four.

It's set to go down at 8:30 p.m. eastern and can be seen, as always, on Fox Sports Detroit.
