The Detroit Tigers finished second place in the Grapefruit League with a record of 20-8, behind only the 24-7 Toronto Blue Jays.

Tigers power hitters Miguel Cabrera (.413, 2 HR, 9 RBI), Delmon Young (.381, 6 HR, 21 RBI) and Prince Fielder (.288, 4HR, 11 RBI) all hit well in the spring, bringing high expectations to Detroit.

Justin Verlander, the Tigers Opening Day starter, went 2-0 with a 2.02 ERA in 26.2 innings in Grapefruit League play. Doug Fister also pitched well for Detroit, going 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA. He pitched 19.2 innings, surrendering only 14 hits and six earned runs.

The Tigers open play on Thursday at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox. Jon Lester will be the Opening Day starter for Boston.

The Tigers lost their Grapefruit League finale to the Toronto Blue Jays, 13-8, on Tuesday afternoon. The Tigers finished 2.5 games back of the Blue Jays in the standings with a record of 20-8 (with some ties).

Max Scherzer, getting his work in before the regular season begins on Thursday in Detroit, got lit up for 11 hits and nine runs (seven earned) in 4.1 innings. The Tigers' hitters banged out 13 hits and scored eight runs in their final tune up.

Of course, the biggest story for the Tigers is the injury to reliever Luis Marte, who left the game with a hamstring injury and was subsequently placed on the 15-day disabled list. Marte is being replaced on the roster by Duane Below, who was once a candidate to be the No. 5 starter but was ultimately won by 22-year-old lefty Drew Smyly.

The Detroit Tigers are getting set, just like every team in the MLB, and have their roster mostly in place. Well, that's getting a bit of a shakeup, with an injury coming to one of their pitching staff. Jason Beck reports, via Twitter, that Luis Marte is going to head to the disabled list:

Marte had just made it onto the roster, coming out of his first pro camp. He was called up last year for limited time in Detroit's bullpen and, though he was considered someone with a lot of potential, his name didn't come up much in early roster discussions. In 13 innings during the exhibition season, Marte allowed three runs and five hurts, walking three and striking out a very stellar 16 batters.

There's already speculation as to who will replace Marte for the time being, and as the Detroit Free Press notes, Brayan Villarreal was the last pitcher to go when the pitching staff was finalized. He was optioned just after Duane Below, to Triple-A Toledo.

On Tuesday, the Detroit Tigers placed third baseman Brandon Inge on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained left groin, according to MLive.com.

The 15-day timeframe will be backdated to March 30.

If there's a silver lining, Inge's injury finalizes the Tigers' 25-man roster without them having to make any cuts before opening day.

For now, the move essentially allows the team to keep outfielders Clete Thomas, Andy Dirks and infielder Danny Worth -- barring an acquisition from outside the organization.

But a move will be required next week when the team calls up left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly, who is not on the 40-man roster, for his start April 12.

A move will, however, be required to activate Inge, who can come off the DL on April 14.

Inge, who made his major league debut in 2001, has spent his entire career with Detroit. Last season was his worst since he was a rookie: In 102 games he hit just .197 with a .265 OBP. His 53 hits, three home runs and 23 RBI were all the lowest since his rookie campaign, when he played just 79 games.

Drew Smyly, 22, started on Monday for Detroit in his first start since being named the fifth pitcher in the rotation. He took a shutout into the fifth inning before surrendering four runs in the inning. Smyly struck out four and walked two in five and 1/3 innings.

The Detroit Tigers have finally named their No. 5 starting pitcher to open the 2012 campaign, and it will be Drew Smyly who will get the first crack at the job. The Tigers' official Twitter account broke the news early on Sunday, setting the stage for Smyly's debut game in the rotation against Tampa Bay on April 12th.

Besides a bad 0-2 pitch to Dan Uggla in the bottom of the fourth inning that resulted in the Braves' only run, Justin Verlander appeared to be in mid-season form in his final tune up start before Opening Day next Thursday. Verlander tossed six innings in the Tigers' 2-1 rain shortened win; he allowed the one earned run, gave up four hits and struck out five opposite no walks. Verlander finishes Spring Training with a 2.02 ERA, his second best spring in terms of ERA and had his highest strikeout rate (25 in 26.2 innings).

The Tigers got five hits in the win -- one each from Austin Jackson, Miguel Cabrera, Prince Fielder, Jhonny Peralta and Clete Thomas. Thomas provided the game-winning run on a solo blast off Braves starter Tommy Hanson in the fifth inning.

The Tigers have three games remaining in Florida before a final exhibition against the Toledo Mud Hens, their Triple-A affiliate, on Wednesday. It's been reported the Tigers might roll out their Opening Day lineup tomorrow against the Astros, save for Verlander, of course.
