It was already reported that Roger Goodell was going to be visiting the Detroit Lions as part of his regularly-scheduled tour of NFL training camps on Thursday, but the thought that Goodell was coming to set some people straight in regards to offseason conduct was quickly extinguished -- once again, because Goodell had this scheduled months ago.

As it turns out, Goodell is going to spend a little extra time with a couple players. The Lions had seven offseason arrests this time around ... and not with seven players. Aaron Berry was already released for his multiple arrests, and the Lions have two other players on the roster who were arrested twice this offseason: running back Mikel Leshoure and defensive tackle Nick Fairley.

According to MLive.com, Goodell plans to meet with Fairley and Leshoure specifically after all of Thursday's practices are wrapped up. Goodell already touched on some of the issues when he met with the team early on Thursday, but he needs to spend some extra time with those players:

"You're an NFL player," Goodell said. "You have to conduct yourself in a certain way and hold yourself to that standard. We're going to expect that, and the club is going to expect that."

Leshoure has been handed a two-game suspension by the league for his offseason issues, while Fairley has yet to get any punishment, though one is still forthcoming. Fairley still has an ongoing court case, but the league may hand out some punishment before it wraps up. Goodell wants to make it clear that this thing is not okay, so it wouldn't be surprising if Goodell handed out punishment sooner rather than later -- to Fairley and to the Lions.

Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure spoke to the media for the first time after it was announced that he would be suspended for the first two games of the regular season steaming from marijuana possession.

Leshoure handled the situation very well and said that he is learning from his mistakes and plans to move forward:

"You have to face what you do wrong. I know one thing for sure, one thing for certain I've learned from my mistakes, still putting it behind me. You've got to accept it and move forward, come back that third game and put it in the past,'' Leshoure said.

[...]

"My reaction was it's out of my hands. I can't do anything about it, don't sit here and linger over it just put it in the past, keep getting better this offseason and come back ready to play,'' Leshoure said.

On Wednesday afternoon, the NFL announced that Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was going to be suspended for two games without pay at the start of the 2012 season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Leshoure had been cited on two separate occasions over the course of a few weeks this offseason for marijuana possession, which is why a suspension was handed down instead of a fine. Following the announcement, the Detroit Lions released a statement regarding the action taken by the NFL.

Via the Detroit Lions official blog:

"We support the Commissioner's decision regarding Mikel and appreciate the dialogue that we have had with the League office concerning the matter," Lions president Tom Lewand said.

"As we have previously stated, we expect every member of our organization to uphold a greater standard of behavior. If that standard is not upheld, those responsible will be held accountable.

"Our belief and expectation is that Mikel will continue to learn from this experience and use it as positive motivation moving forward."

The Detroit Lions are going to be without running back Mikel Leshoure for at least a little while longer, according to Tim Twentyman on the official website. The report says that Leshoure is going to be handed a two-game suspension on Wednesday after he was cited twice this offseason for marijuana possession with only a couple weeks in between the citations.

Usually, a player will be fined after one transgression of this kind, but given the fact that his citations were so close to one another, many felt a suspension was guaranteed. Leshoure missed his entire rookie season after tearing his Achilles tendon in training camp a season ago. He still has not played in a game with the Lions, and now he'll miss at least two more.

That being said, he's expected to be healthy for the season. The extra two weeks could be very good for him, as Achilles tendon injuries are very serious, especially for a running back. Leshoure is expected to be docked two additional game checks as a fine for this incident, and according to Dave Birkett on Twitter, that will end up costing him $109,411.

Mikel Leshoure pleaded guilty to a charge of marijuana possession May 11 and managed to walk away with just a $575 fine, which is a little over two speeding tickets.

"You live and you learn," LeShoure said. "Everybody makes mistakes. It’s what you do after it and how you overcome those hurdles. I’ve learned and I’m making the best of my opportunities." [...]

"Just gotta be smart, man," LeShoure said. "It’s nothing specifically that I’m going to do or that I need to change, it’s just I need to be aware of my surroundings and what’s going on and just be smart and make better decisions. You make mistakes, you just gotta learn from them and move forward."

Back on March 12, Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure was arrested after being caught on the highway with marijuana, which he was cramming into his mouth to try and hide from the police. It was his second such charge in two months.

On Friday, it was reported that Mikel pleaded guilty to a plea bargained charge and managed to knock down the sentence to only a $575 fine, which he paid, and no jail time. Part of the plea bargain came from the fact that the NFL's policies will likely come down hard on Leshoure, which was pleaded to the judge by Leshoure's lawyer:

Leshoure's sentence was $575 in fines and costs, with no jail time. His lawyer, Joseph Lavigne of Farmington Hills, told Judge Shelton Schrock that Leshoure faced "collateral consequences" with the National Football League as a result of the criminal case.

Schrock agreed that the NFL's testing program was more stringent than would what be ordered by the court. Lavigne said that Leshoure is in a 24-month program that initially requires him to be test two or three times a week for drug use.

Leshoure told the judge that he had made a mistake. "I want to move on and put this in my past," he said.

Hopefully he's not lying and he can get back to work with the Lions. He could, of course, still be facing tough discipline from the NFL after two charges in a row.

Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure made an appearance in a Berrien County court on Wednesday morning for a March 12 arrest for marijuana possession. Before being released, Leshoure asked for and was granted a preliminary exam on the felony charge stemming from his second marijuana arrest in a month. He has a pre-exam conference on May 11 and a hearing scheduled for May 15, according to the Detroit Free Press.

Leshoure was arrested on Feb. 18 for marijuana possession. He was able to work that charge down and paid a $485 fine.

Leshoure and the Lions should know more about his legal fate after the May hearing. He could still be facing discipline from the league, up to a four-game suspension even. Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley was arrested in Alabama on Tuesday for marijuana possession, and offensive tackle Johnny Culbreath was arrested in January for marijuana possession as well.

Detroit Lions running back Mikel Leshoure is facing felony marijuana charges, according to the Detroit Free Press.

This is Leshoure's second marijuana charge in less than a month.

The most recent arrest stems from a March 12 traffic stop in which Leshoure was the passenger in a car pulled over by police. According to the Free Press, the police report of the incident includes these details:

Leshoure was "chewing marijuana" and the officer saw "small pieces of marijuana down the front of his shirt."

Leshoure complied when ordered to spit out the marijuana.

Leshoure admitted to smoking marijuana before the SUV was pulled over but said most of the substance in his mouth was potpourri mixed with marijuana.

The amount of marijuana, according to Baroda-Lake Township police chief Gary Ruhl, was only enough for personal use.

Leshoure, a second-year player out of Illinois, missed all of his rookie season with a torn Achilles tendon.

Leshoure was also stopped on Feb. 18 by Benton Township police and cited for marijuana possession. He pleaded to a lesser charge of marijuana use and paid fines totaling $485.

Leshoure could also be subject to fines and/or suspensions from the NFL.
