It was business as usual for Detroit on Wednesday night in Kansas City, as the Tigers used a middle inning rally from Prince Fielder and Miguel Cabrera to pull out a 4-3 win and a series sweep of the Royals.

The victory gave Detroit its second sweep of the 2012 season, and dropped Kansas City's home record to an abysmal 0-5. In addition to Fielder (2-for-4) and Cabrera (2-for-5) having big games, catcher Gerald Laird also finished the night with a pair of hits, continuing his hot start to the year as the Tigers' stellar backup option behind the plate.

Tigers starter Max Scherzer also picked up his first win of the year after going six innings with three strikeouts, and bounced back from a dangerous third inning where he allowed two runs to cross the plate and looked to be coming unraveled. Second baseman Brandon Inge, however, continues to struggle in his bid for consistent playing time, and finished 0-for-4 to lower his season average to .100. Inge will need to drastically improve his plate discipline if he hopes to stick around in the day-to-day lineup.

Next up for the Tigers is a highly-anticipated four-game series with the Texas Rangers that kicks off on Thursday as rookie hurler Adam Wilk is expected to take the mound.

The big story for the Detroit Tigers during the offseason was the addition of big hitter Prince Fielder, but it's been the pitching that has led them to two straight wins over the Kansas City Royals in their three game series. Ace Justin Verlander pitched a great game in the first, a 3-2 victory. In Tuesday's 3-1 win, Drew Smyly allowed only one run in six innings as well.

Matt Scherzer, taking the mound for Detroit, will need to avoid an outing like his last two if he wants to keep that train of good pitching rolling. His 10.38 ERA and one loss are from a seven run performance in two and two thirds innings in his first game and a three run in six inning performance against the White Sox his last time out. He has been a master of strikeouts, with 14 on the young season.

He will face former San Francisco lefty Jonathan Sanchez, who has a win but mediocre stats otherwise.

Kansas City has lost six straight games including the two in this series.

The game will be at Kauffman Stadium at

Miguel Cabrera was in the midst of his worst slump since his rookie season, hitless in his last 22 at bats, but he broke out of it in a much needed way on Tuesday night. Cabrera knocked in the game-winning run on a single in the top of the 8th inning, his second hit of the game, to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead.

Octavio Dotel picked up the win by working a scoreless inning, although he put two runners on in the bottom half of the seventh. He came in to relieve rookie Drew Smyly, who tossed another strong outing in just his second big league start. Smyly gave up just one unearned run in six innings of work while striking out four and walking one. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his second save of the season.

Prince Fielder, who had two hits, knocked in the insurance run for the Tigers and Ramon Santiago had the team's first RBI in the game.

The Tigers will close out their three-game series with the Royals Wednesday night at 8:10 p.m. ET.

After Justin Verlander's complete game victory last night, the Detroit Tigers will look to rookie Drew Smyly to silence the Kansas City Royals bats for a second straight game. Smyly went four innings and gave up one run against the Tampa Bay Rays on April 12 in his first start of the season.

Facing the Tigers will be Bruce Chen, who has posted a 4-3 record and 5.95 ERA in 13 career appearances against Detroit.

Several of the Tigers have had plenty of success against Chen. Miguel Cabrera is 9-for-18 with three home runs in his career off the 31-year-old right-hander. Meanwhile, Delmon Young is 6-for-11 off Chen, and Ryan Raburn has taken him deep twice in 20 at-bats.

First pitch is schedule for 8:10 ET.

He gave up a run in the first inning and a run in the ninth, but Justin Verlander dominated every inning in between en route to a complete game, 3-2 victory. The win is Verlander's first this season after Valverde blew his Opening Day start and Verlander blew his gem in his second.

Brandon Inge provided the game-winning hit, a two-run homer in the top half of the fifth inning. Yes, you read that correctly. Austin Jackson was the other run when he led off the game with a homer.

The win wasn't without the Tigers' 2012 trademarked ninth inning dramatics, as Verlander allowed a run and loaded the bases before striking out Alex Gordon looking on a 100 MPH fastball to finish the game. The game to a close on Verlander's 131st pitch of the game, one off from his career high. Verlander struck out nine.

Drew Smyly takes the ball for the Tigers on Tuesday with first pitch slated for 8:10 p.m. ET.

The Detroit Tigers will start a series against the Kansas City Royals on Monday with Justin Verlander on the mound.

Justin Verlander lost his first game since last July when he dropped a 4-2 decision to the Tampa Bay Rays, but he'll get a good chance to avenge himself in his next start on Monday, when the Detroit Tigers head over to Kansas City to start a three game series against the Royals. Verlander is 13-2 all time against the Royals and hasn't lost two games in a row since last April, so the stats are certainly on his side in this one.

Danny Duffy will take the mound for KC, going off a great first appearance that saw him strike out eight in six innings of work as he picked up a one hitter win against the Oakland A's.

The Royals are currently on a five game losing streak, while the Tigers were able to stave off a sweep by the Chicago White Sox to keep their record at a respectable 6-3 with a 5-2 win on Sunday.

The game will be at Kauffman Stadium at 8:10 p.m. ET.
