Detroit Tigers reliever Daniel Schlereth pitched a hitless inning for single-A Lakeland on Saturday night. He now has six innings of one-run, three-hit ball under his belt on the rehab assignment.

The 26-year-old leftie was placed on the 60-day DL in April after six early appearances that didn't go so well (10.29 ERA, brutal 2.71 WHIP in 7.0 innings pitched). He pitched pretty well for the Tigers in 49 games in 2011, posting a 3.49 ERA with 44 strikeouts.

Schlereth is scheduled for two more weeks in Single-A. He'll have to be called up by the end of August if he wants to see any potential postseason time with the Tigers, who are currently two games behind the first-place Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.

On a busy day of roster moves for the Detroit Tigers' organization, the team officially assigned left-handed pitcher Daniel Schlereth to Single-A Lakeland on Friday to begin what could amount to a lengthy rehab assignment:

The 26-year-old reliever admitted he was experiencing problems with his throwing shoulder back in April, and was then quickly placed on the 60-day disabled list by the team. Though he showed promise last season with a 3.49 ERA over 49 appearances for Jim Leyland's playoff-bound Tigers, Schlereth's six-game stint in 2012 has left him with rather brutal numbers in both earned-run average (10.29) and WHIP (2.71).

Many in Detroit's organization remain confident that Schlereth still has immense potential and should still develop into the best lefty specialist in the bullpen, but it's clear that he'll have to spend a good deal of time in the minors impressing coaches after ignoring surgery earlier this summer.

Instead of having surgery to repair damage in his injured throwing shoulder, Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Daniel Schlereth opted to use therapy to get himself back to action, and is reportedly back to tossing bullpen sessions according to The Detroit News' Lynn G. Henning:

Schlereth was moved to the 60-day disabled list on June 2 after an MRI revealed no structural damage, but had to face a decision about whether to have surgery to fully repair the injury or try and rush back into action. Although he currently sports an inordinately-high 10.29 earned-run average in 2012, the 26-year-old lefty was a valuable part of Detroit's bullpen last season with a 3.49 ERA over 49 appearances, and could be a boost down the stretch if he's able to avoid another setback in his recovery.

On Wednesday afternoon, Detroit Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand updated the status of injured relief pitcher Daniel Schlereth. Schlereth was moved to the 60-day disabled list on June 2 due to a setback in his recovery while rehabbing from an injured shoulder and is currently suffering from shoulder tendonitis.

Rand said that Schlereth was making progress, should return to mound work in the near future and is currently rehabbing at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic in Denver, Colorado.

Via mlive.com:

"He's throwing now to 120 feet," Rand said. "We're getting close to the point where he'd be ready to resume a mound progression. At that point, we'll reassess him."

Schlereth is expected to report to Lakeland, Florida, in the near future to begin training with regular throwing.

At this time, Schlereth is in Denver taking part in a rehabilitation program that is working on range-of-motion and strengthening exercises with a physical therapist by the name of Mike Allen.

Schelereth received a second examination last week at the Steadman Hawkins Clinic in Denver after suffering a minor setback in his rehab when he was unable to finish a 30-pitch bullpen session after attempting only 15 pitches. The follow-up examination this week matched the initial results, which displayed rotator cuff tendinitis inflammation. The injury was discovered when the Tigers attempted to move Schelereth to Triple-A Toledo, the move was voided when the pitcher admitted that his shoulder had been bothering him for an extended period of time.

Details of the setback remain unclear, but Tigers head athletic trainer Kevin Rand confirmed that Schlereth had his left throwing shoulder examined Tuesday morning.

Schlereth has a 10.29 ERA in seven innings of work this season. After being demoted, Schlereth admitted that he had been pitching through shoulder pain, so he never made an appearance with the Mud Hens, allowing his option to be voided.
