Just 11 days ago, Chicago White Sox announcer Hawk Harrelson provided a memorable call of a walk-off home run by the Detroit Tigers by not even actually making a call. The walk-off homer by the Tigers left Harrelson in stunned silence for a minute, and it was nice to not hear him for a change.

On Tuesday afternoon in Chicago, the White Sox nearly hit a walk-off home run of their own to cap off a comeback in the ninth inning against the Tigers. When contact was initially made by Dayan Viciedo, it seemed like the Tigers were about to experience a disaster of a finish. Instead, however, the ball came down just in front of the right field fence, and Brennan Boesch made the catch for the Tigers. Just like that, the game was over, and the Tigers escaped with a 10-8 victory.

As if that wasn't good enough, we got another classic call from Harrelson, who was quite upset that the ball didn't carry out for a home run. Check it out:

There's nothing better than seeing two opposing fans forced to sit next to each other at a sporting event. But well-prepared inter-family rivalries can often be just as entertaining, and this photo from Tuesday's Tigers vs. White Sox game was a prime example of why.
↵

The Cardinals shirt is puzzling to be sure, but these all-too-conveniently-placed signs worked like a charm as FSN Detroit's cameras caught them in the 7th inning. And let's be honest, the execution here was impeccable. It's also win-win situation for both sides too. The son gets to call his dad an idiot, while the dad gets to hold pro Tigers sign on live television. And now they're immortalized on the internet. Double win.
↵
Thankfully the father had the last laugh as Detroit won the game 10-8, but this youngster, despite being a Sox fan, really looks to have a promising career of sign-making ahead of him. Provided he cleans up his language, of course.

Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde left Tuesday's game in the ninth inning with lower back tightness.

The bullpen situation in Detroit just got a whole lot messier. Tigers closer Jose Valverde entered Tuesday's game in a non-save situation needing just three outs to preserve a Detroit victory, but could only manage two before grimacing in pain and leaving the game with reported lower back tightness according to Fox Sports Detroit.

Without Valverde in to close the door, the Tigers gave the ball to reliever Octavio Dotel, who promptly gave up a pair of runs before he could even record an out. Dotel not only nearly blew the game in the process, but sucked even more wind from the sails of Tigers fans brave enough to wonder what life without Valverde might be like.

If Valverde is forced to miss even a brief amount of time, it's expected that set-up man Joaquin Benoit will assume the closer role in full. But even that scenario would leave a significant hole in the 7th and 8th innings, which could force Tigers starters to pitch deeper into games and tax the most essential part of organization's pitching staff. For now, though, it's expected that Valverde is day-to-day, but be sure to stay with SB Nation Detroit for more updates as news becomes available.

The Tigers overcame another rough outing from starter Max Scherzer to split a brief two-game series with Chicago on Tuesday, but not after a wild sixth inning that included three Detroit home runs flipped the game on its head.

With the White Sox ahead 6-0 on the scoreboard after Scherzer was sent to the showers after just four innings, it looked like yet another underwhelming performance by Jim Leyland's team on their stand away from Comerica Park. But in the sixth inning with Chicago starter Jake Peavy laboring, a two-run Miguel Cabrera homer kickstarted a Detroit offensive explosion that would eventually tally eight Tigers' runs against White Sox pitchers in the frame alone.

Light-hitting Ryan Raburn broke out of his slump at the plate a bit with a 2-for-5, 4-RBI performance that included his first home run of the season, while leadoff hitter Austin Jackson belted arguably his longest hit in a Tigers' uniform with a straightaway center field home run of his own later in the same inning.

Unfortunately for Detroit, closer Jose Valverde left the game after recording just two outs in his bid to shut the door in the ninth inning. Valverde grimaced in pain after his final throw and was taken into the locker room after it became clear he could not finish the inning. Reliever Octavio Dotel allowed two Chicago runs before recording the final out to seal Detroit's win, but clearly the repercussions of this injury could be rather disastrous for the Tigers' bullpen going forward, so stay with SB Nation Detroit for complete coverage of his injury.

Now back to 18-18 and .500 on the year though, the Tigers will return home for a very manageable five-game stretch with Minnesota and Pittsburgh that starts on Wednesday.

Behind by six runs and held scoreless through five innings, things were looking quite bleak for the Detroit Tigers at the midpoint of game two on the South Side on Tuesday afternoon. And then, well, Miguel Cabrera happened.

Kickstarted by a two-run blast from a red-hot Cabrera, the Tigers scored eight runs in a wild sixth inning to take an 8-6 lead and effectively pull the rug right out from an unsuspecting White Sox team. After Cabrera's bomb, struggling utilityman Ryan Raburn knocked his first homer of 2012 out of the yard with a three-run shot, and leadoff hitter Austin Jackson promptly followed suit with a 2-run jack of his own to dead center field shortly thereafter.

The offensive-fueled inning marked the second time on the Tigers' road trip that they managed eight runs in a frame after pounded Oakland for as many runs last week.

This latest change of fortune on the scoreboard comes in stark contrast to the pitching effort picked up by Detroit today, after starter Max Scherzer went just 4.0 innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. The Tigers will need to stay strong in the bullpen to protect this lead in the final innings.

Max Scherzer continues to round into form. Now, about that offense...

The Detroit Tigers will send Scherzer, 2-3, to the hill Tuesday versus the Chicago White Sox in the final meeting of a two-game swing through Chi-town.

Since getting bombed in his season opener -- seven earned runs through 2.2 innings -- Scherzer has been solid for the Tigers. In his last two starts, he pitched 13.1 innings, struck out 18 batters and gave up just three runs. His once astronomical ERA has plummeted from 23.62 to 5.73 (it's 2.03 in May alone).

The Tigers offense has been a little slower to come along. They are averaging fewer than four runs per game over their last 11. Before last night's five-run outburst -- it would have been more but for the 13 runners left on base -- Detroit had scored just eight runs in their previous three ball games.

The offense will have a tall order Tuesday. Jake Peavy takes the hill for the Sox with a 4-1 record and 1.89 ERA.

Detroit is two games back of the Cleveland Indians in the AL Central.

First pitch Tuesday is scheduled for 2:10 Eastern.

The Tigers' streak of games without two consecutive wins continued on Monday night, as they fell to the Chicago White Sox, 7-5.

The Tigers scored three times in the top of the first and another two in the third, but the White Sox hit a pair of two-run homers off Tigers starter Drew Smyly and scored another three off Luke Putkonen, who relieved Smyly in the sixth inning after Smyly threw just 69 pitches.

The Tigers had plenty of opportunities with 12 hits and six walks, but they were a poor 3-for-17 with runners in scoring position and left 13 stranded on the base paths in the game.

Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder each had three hits in the loss.

The brief, two-game series wraps up Tuesday afternoon at 2:10 p.m. ET.
