Twins

Quintin Berry has made history with the Tigers in his first five games in the big leagues, but perhaps the best thing he has done in his short stint with the team thus far has been on the defensive side of things.

With the Tigers trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth of Sunday's game and a Twin on third base with two outs, Jamey Carroll hit a screaming line drive to center that looked like trouble. Berry appeared to misplay the tailing liner at first, but recovered well enough to be able to dive back over his left shoulder to make a fantastic grab.

After the ninth inning, in which Berry collected his third hit of the game and second stolen base before scoring on Miguel Cabrera's game-winning home run, one can look back on Berry's catch and argue reasonably that it was a game saver. If Berry doesn't make that catch, one run scores and perhaps Carroll rounds the bases for an inside the park home run to give the Twins a three-run lead.

It's not often that you hear, when a big slugger comes up to the plate, 'Run into one like the pitcher did' in regards to the slugger needing a big hit. Most pitchers aren't known for their home run prowess, specifically in the AL when there's no batting to be done by pitchers except in interleague situations.
↵
Still, Tigers manager Jim Leyland reportedly said just that when Miguel Cabrera stepped up to the plate in a crucial situation against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday. Back in batting practice before the game, pitcher Justin Verlander hit a home run and Leyland was impressed enough to call on the mojo of that HR when Cabrera came to bat looking for a late win.
↵
↵
Verlander confirmed the turn of events while getting ready to leave the Tigers clubhouse after the game.

Yeah," Verlander said. "He called it."

And about that batting practice homer?

"I hit a bomb," Verlander said. "It wasn't a cheapie."
↵
↵
It worked well enough; Cabrera's resulting home run won the game for the Tigers against the Twins, sealing a three game sweep against the AL Central's worst team.

The Detroit Tigers pulled off a three-game sweep of the Twins on Sunday afternoon at Target Field, powered by a straightaway centerfield home run from the bat of superstar Miguel Cabrera in the ninth inning that left Minnesota fans speechless. The blast, Cabrera's ninth of the year, came on a 0-2 count with one out against Twins closer Matt Capps.

Detroit starter Rick Porcello tossed six innings of three-run ball, but scattered nine hits and completely wore down as he approached the middle innings. The Tigers originally rushed out to an early 2-0 advantage behind a pair of first inning RBIs from Cabrera and outfielder Brennan Boesch, but gave up three Minnesota runs over the fourth and fifth innings and looked to be out of the game until the final frame.

Tigers prospect Quintin Berry finished the day 3-for-4 from the plate, becoming the first Detroit player to open his career hitting safely in his first five games since all the way back in 1918. Berry also made an impressive diving catch in the outfield with two outs and a Minnesota runner on third base to save a run in the eighth, and truly appears to have a role in this Tigers' organization if he can stay healthy.

Next up for the Tigers is a trip to Boston for a four-game series with the Red Sox. Detroit swept Boston 3-0 to open the season, and will be aiming for a .500 record by series' end.

The Detroit Tigers will try to keep their bats cracking and earn a sweep on the road to complete their weekend series against the Minnesota Twins on Sunday afternoon.

Young, right-hander Rick Porcello will be on the mound for the Tigers looking to put his recent struggles behind him to earn the win. Porcello enters the game with a 3-4 record and 5.29 ERA and could use the type of run support the Tigers have generated in the first two games in which they've belted 28 hits.

The Twins will give the ball to right-hander P.J. Walters to try to avoid the sweep. Walters have been solid since joining the starting rotation, most notably in his last outing in which he posted a complete game win over the Chicago White Sox. Walters is 2-1 with a 2.91 ERA on the season.

The game at Target Field will start at 2:10 p.m. ET and will be televised on Fox Sports Detroit.

There were stars galore in the Detroit Tigers 6-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Saturday. But Tigers manager Jim Leyland decided to go a different route when deciding who his player of the game was, according to MLive.com.

"The hero of the game, for me, was Octavio Dotel," Leyland said.

Dotel entered the game after a 42-minute rain delay with one out in the sixth inning with runners on first and third and his team up 6-3 and proceeded to retired all five batters he faced including four via strikeouts. He threw 20 pitches (16 strikes).

"That was impressive," Leyland said. "That was not an easy situation to come in there and get both of those guys [the Twins' Josh Willingham and Justin Morneau] like he did and then pitch another clean inning. That was tremendous for us, and we needed it. He picked us up today."

Dotel enjoys such situations and thrives in them.

"I love that," Dotel said. "That's what I'm here for. I love to have that feeling. Sometimes, we don't do it - or I don't do it - but I have to have that feeling."

The Detroit Tigers (23-24) defeated the Minnesota Twins (15-32), 6-3, on Saturday. The win marks the first time since April 18 that the Tigers have won two games in a row and they once again did it with their bats.

Miguel Cabrera went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored and Andy Dirks went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Tigers. Prince Fielder went 4-for-4 with an RBI as the Tigers racked up 12 hits to help give pitcher Max Scherzer his fourth win of the year. Scherzer went 5.1 innings and gave up three runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and Jose Valverde recorded his eighth save of the season.

A four-run fifth inning broke open a 2-2 game and the Tigers never looked back. The Twins struckout 16 times and left 10 runners on base as they only managed eight hits in 34 at-bats. Denard Span went 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Ben Revere went 3-for-4 to lead the Twins. Twins starter Carl Pavano was rocked for six runs on 10 hits in 4.1 innings to drop to 2-4 on the season.

The Detroit Tigers exploded for four runs in the fifth inning against the Minnesota Twins just before a rain delay halted play in the bottom of the sixth with the Tigers leading the Twins, 6-3.

The Tigers' bats have come alive to the tune of 11 hits to get their six runs, sending Twins starter Carl Pavano to the bullpen after only 4 1/3 innings. Pavano gave up six runs on 10 hits to the Tigers lineup, giving way to reliever Brian Duensing and the Twins' bullpen. It is now in the top of the eighth inning with the same score.

Hopefully the weather continues to behave long enough for the Tigers to close out the game with a win.

After putting up 10 runs on 16 hits in Friday night's 10-6 win against the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers' bats are heating up.

The Tigers left 10 base runners on base in each of their three losses to the Cleveland Indians in the middle of the week, indicating that the bats were coming alive, but just not at the right time. On Friday night, they strung some hits together to finally put up some run support for Drew Smyly and they've carried that over into Saturday afternoon's game.

Through five innings of play, the Tigers have six runs on 10 hits. Against Carl Pavano in the fifth, they had six consecutive hits that plated four runs to chase Pavano from the game.

Andy Dirks has two hits and two runs batted in, Miguel Cabrera has two hits and Prince Fielder has his second consecutive three-hit game.

The Tigers currently lead 6-2.
