Unrestricted free agent forward Tomas Holmstrom has planned to meet with the Detroit Red Wings to discuss his future in the NHL -- he has already revealed that the Red Wings are the only NHL team he would consider signing with-- but recently he told Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press that he will take his time with the decision:

"I have not decided what I'm going to do," Holmstrom said [on Friday]. "I will take my time."

The 39-year-old veteran is playing the waiting game along with everyone else as the NHL and NHLPA attempt to work out a new Collective Bargaining Agreement while the Sept. 15 expiration date on the current CBA creeps closer. According to the piece by St. James, Holmstrom's family wants him to keep playing, but he is still determined to take his time and make sure it is the right decision to return.

Over the next week, Tomas Holmstrom and the Detroit Red Wings will be meeting to determine the fate of the 39-year-old forward to see if the two sides can come to an agreement on what seemingly would be Holmstrom's final professional contract in North America.

Some outlets have speculated that Holmstrom may be too old for the Red Wings' plans and he would be forced to play with another franchise. However, Holmstrom has made it clear that he will either be playing in Detroit next season or he won't be playing at all. Via the Detroit News:

A report on the Swedish website HockeyExpressen.se suggested otherwise.

"Not true at all," Holmstrom said. "It's playing in Detroit, or nowhere else."

Holmstrom is training as he has the past 15 summers preparing for an NHL schedule. But he isn't sure if he's ready for the grind of another season.

"I appreciate Kenny giving me this time to think about things," Holmstrom said. "I'm training, I'm working out. But a lot of it depends on my health, my knees."

Holmstrom went on to add that he isn't concerned about his role being affected because he believes he still can help the team with his contributions.

He has spent all 15 of his NHL seasons with the Red Wings, playing in 1,026 games over that span.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Detroit Red Wings and Tomas Holmstrom announced that the two sides would be coming to a decision on the 15-year veteran's future by next week at the latest.

Considering that he is getting up there in age and that his good friend Nicklas Lidstrom retired earlier this offseason, there are plenty of components that need to be considered before this decision is made.

"I wanted to give him a lot of time (to think about it)," Holland said. "It's been tough for him. His best friend was Nick Lidstrom. And he sees a lot of the players he grew up with have retired. He's battled. He's played a hard 1,000 games.

Red Wings general manager Ken Holland plans to meet with Holmstrom in the coming days.

"I want to sit and talk to him," Holland said. "Homer knows there's a lot of competition. No one knows as well as Homer does of how hard he's worked and how hard he has competed and how hard he's gone to the hard areas for over 1,000 games since 1996.

"That's a conversation that him and I need to have and talk it over."

After Nicklas Lidstrom announced his retirement on May 31, Tomas Holmstrom made it sound like he would announce a decision about his future sometime in June. He was still undecided at the time, but a decision was expected to come down at some point this month.

Now it looks like the plan is for Holmstrom to wait until July to figure out his future. This is because the Red Wings aren't planning on deciding on whether or not Holmstrom will be offered a contract until July.

Holmstrom told the Free Press on Monday that he spoke to general manager Ken Holland and "they're going to decide (in the) beginning of July what's going to happen."

Based on what Holmstrom said, the Red Wings' decision on his future likely won't be made until they have a better idea of what their roster will look like next season. In other words, a decision will be made on Holmstrom after free agency begins and the first wave of signings/trades happens. At that point, the Red Wings will know if they have room for Holmstrom, and they will decide if they want to re-sign him or not.

Considering Holmstrom seems content with waiting to hear the Red Wings' plans, his decision on retirement will likely come down to whether or not he receives a contract offer. If the Red Wings want to bring him back, it sounds like Holmstrom is willing to play another season. If the Red Wings decide he's not in their plans, however, then Holmstrom will likely retire.

Now that Nicklas Lidstrom has retired, Tomas Holmstrom will make a decision on his NHL future very soon.

After watching his good friend Nicklas Lidstrom walk away from the sport he loves earlier in the week, Detroit Red Wings forward Tomas Holmstrom is expected to make a decision on whether he will play next season in the coming weeks.

"It's probably coming soon," Holmstrom told MLive.com on Thursday after Lidstrom's press conference. "I have to figure it out and I really don't know right now. I go back and forth and try to figure out my body."

Holmstrom has played for 15 NHL seasons, amassing 243 goals and 287 assists for 530 points. He is one of just six Detroit players all-time to have suited up for 1,000 games, and will be remembered as one of the most successful goalie screeners of the last decade regardless of when he decides to walk away.

Despite playing 74 times during the past season, the veteran winger tallied just 11 goals in 2011-12, his lowest output in a ten-year span. Even to most casual observers it has been painfully obvious that age and health have caught up with the bruising power forward over the last two seasons, and that another injury-plagued campaign might simply be too much to take. It makes perfect sense that Holmstrom would leave the game in the same year where his Hall of Fame buddy also said goodbye, but that doesn't erase the legions of hockey fans in Motown that would be enamored to have him back for a farewell tour.
