Adam Scott of Australia had never won a Major before in his career, though he had come across a few close calls over the years. The British Open ended up being yet another frustrating close call to add to his collection, as he melted down late to hand the Claret Jug to longshot Ernie Els.

Scott had put together an impressive four stroke lead with four holes to go, but bogeyed the first three en route to a missed putt that could have forced a playoff. Instead, Els ended up holding the trophy in the end, his fourth Major title and his second win at the British Open.

Tiger Woods had been the favorite from the beginning in the tourney, but had a triple bogeyed hole late in the proceedings to essentially knock himself out. His almost four-year-long major title drought will continue, as he finished only in third place with a 3-under score. Phil Mickelson and Bubba Watson, also favored contenders at the start, did not fare too well with Mickelson missing the first cut and Watson barely scraping it. Watson ended up tied for 23rd.

Michigan graduate Justin Hicks did well for himself early on in the tournament by earning a 2-over score at the first cut which kept him in, but slowly sank as the rounds kept going and ended up with a 6-over score, good only for 45th place.

After a complete collapse down the stretch by 54-hole leader Adam Scott, tour veteran Ernie Els picked up his fourth career major title on Sunday with a 7-under score at the 2012 British Open Championship.

Els carded a 2-under par 68 to enter the clubhouse at 7-under, and watched as Scott, who appeared to have the tournament wrapped up, procede to bogey each of his final four holes to cough the lead away. After being forced to waste a shot out of the bunker due to an errant drive, Scott, needing a par to force a playoff on the 18th hole, missed what amounted to a 10-foot putt that would've kept his title hopes alive.

A winner at the British Open in 2002 at Muirfield Golf Links, Els has now won a major title in three separate decades, which is an impressive achievement to say the least. The 42-year-old South Africa native birdied four of his final nine holes in Sunday's round to outlast his competitors, and will enter next year's British Open, held coincidentally at Muirfield, as the unquestioned reigning champion in every sense of the phrase.

Tiger Woods' British Open hopes may have gone up in smoke after he wound up in a deep greenside pot bunker on hole No. 6, leading to a triple-bogey and dropping him to 3-under par, six shots back of leader Adam Scott.

Scott, who began the day at 11-under, just bogeyed No. 6, dropping him to 9-under par. Graeme McDowell, Scott's playing partner, wound up in the aforementioned 'Tiger Bunker' on No. 6 leading to a bogey and dropping McDowell to 5-under par overall.

Despite Scott's bogey on the sixth hole, he owns a four-shot lead over Brandt Snedeker after the American posted a double-bogey on No. 7. Snedeker just yanked his drive on the par-4 eighth hole to the left rough, so he's in danger of dropping even further.

The 'pack' behind Scott has yet to make a move today, so the Australian can perhaps play conservatively with the knowledge that he doesn't need to go low today.

The coveted Claret Jug is up for grabs as the final round of the 2012 British Open is set to begin early Sunday morning, as Australian Adam Scott will try to fend off competitors with a four-stroke lead entering the day.

Scott's third round 68 put him squarely atop a crowded leaderboard that includes a number of former major champions. Although the 32-year-old Scott has never won a major championship in his career, the talented Aussie has inched closer in recent years. With names like Graeme McDowell, Tiger Woods, Ernie Else and Zach Johnson sure to be right on his tail should he slip up even in the slightest bit, Scott knows that his play on Sunday will need to be near-flawless for him to walk away victorious.

Live television coverage of what should prove to be an extremely exciting final round will begin bright and early at 6:00 a.m. EDT on ESPN. The broadcast will then run until the conclusion of the tournament later in the afternoon, although the final group including Scott and McDowell is not scheduled to being until 9:30 a.m.. In addition to the TV coverage, a live online stream can also be accessed via ESPN's Watch ESPN application and through TheOpen.com, the British Open's official website.

Adam Scott re-took his lead at the 2012 British Open in round three, shooting 2-under for the day to finish 11-under heading into the final round on Sunday. He passed up Brandt Snedeker, who absolutely fell apart in round three, finishing the day at 3-over and is tied for second place with Graeme McDowell at 7-under. Tiger Woods holds fourth-place at 6-under after finishing even in round three, and the top five is rounded out by a fifth-place tie between Zach Johnson and Ernie Els.

Johnson finished round three at 4-under and is eyeing another strong day in round four to make a push for the win. Former Michigan Wolverines star Justin Hicks had a solid day, finishing 1-under and is 1-over for the tournament thus far. He's tied for 25th place with six others.

Brandt Snedeker's time at the top of the leaderboard was short-lived, as a rough Round 3 has dropped him into a tie for third place with Tiger Woods. Snedeker bogeyed six times through 16 holes, and is currently 4-over on the day to drop him to 6-under on the tournament.

Adam Scott sits in first place, shooting a solid 2-under through 17 holes and improving his overall total to 11-under. Graeme McDowell is his closest competitor, standing alone in second place with a 54-hole total of 7-under.

Tiger Woods had a shaky start to the day, hitting two bogeys in his first three holes, but has settled down as the day has gone on. He shot par for the round and currently sits in a tie for third at 6-under for the tournament.

Former Michigan Wolverine Justin Hicks recovered from a poor second round, shooting a 1-under par on Saturday to move up 26 spots into a tie for 25th.
