Lions defensive back Drayton Florence was back on the practice field on Wednesday after missing more than a month with a forearm injury.

After missing the last six weeks of action with a broken forearm, Lions defensive back Drayton Florence returned to practice for the first time on Wednesday, according to Dave Birkett of The Detroit Free Press.

Signed by the Lions at the beginning of September, the 31-year-old Florence was officially placed on the team's injured/reserve list with a designation to return after suffering the injury in Week 2. Florence is not allowed to return to until Nov. 18 due to his specialized distinction, but will be permitted to practice in full with his teammates in the meantime.

Sure to offer a significant boost for head coach Jim Schwartz's secondary if he's able to play on Nov. 18 against the rival Green Bay Packers, Florence is one of a handful of Detroit defensive backs that has been forced to battle through injuries in the first-half of 2012. It's quite a promising sign that Florence was available to practice roughly three weeks before his scheduled return date however, and there's a great chance that he'll be ready for live action by mid-November.

Detroit Lions defensive back Drayton Florence hopes to get back on the practice field next Wednesday as he attempts to return from a broken forearm he suffered during Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers.

Detroit Lions defensive back Drayton Florence hopes to get back on the practice field next Wednesday as he attempts to return from a broken forearm he suffered during Week 2 against the San Francisco 49ers. The Lions placed Florence on the injured list and used a designation that allows him to return this season, but he will not be eligible to play until Nov. 18 against the Green Bay Packers, per league rules.

The veteran cornerback called the team's general manager after his successful surgery and emphasized his desire to get back on the field, and Florence is glad the process is going to be set in motion very soon, via MLive.com:

"I told [Lions GM Martin Mayhew] I was ready to go. I just don't like being out, missing time, especially when you feel like you can help. It's just frustrating not being out there, but I used my time that I've been out to study and learn the defense. It's kind of helping me a little bit."

Detroit secondary currently ranks No. 6 in defending the pass, but it also ranks dead last with just two interceptions collected on the year – in contrast to eight touchdown passes allowed.

The Lions take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 8.

Expecting to be without the services of injured cornerback Drayton Florence for a significant amount of time, the Detroit Lions officially placed their ailing defensive back on the injured reserve list with a designation to return on Wednesday according to the Lions' Tim Twentyman.

Florence broke his forearm in the third quarter of Detroit's loss to San Francisco on Sunday Night Football, but reportedly did not tell coaches and opted to finish out the remainder of the game despite the injury. By placing him on the NFL's new short-term injured reserve list however, the Lions will be allowed to let him practice in six weeks and actually return to the field in eight weeks if he's healthy enough to play.

The Lions used Florence's open roster spot to get formerly-suspended tailback Mikel Leshoure back on the roster heading into Sunday's must-win game with Tennessee. Leshoure is expected to factor into the mix for carries right away, and the coaching staff should be eager to see what the second-year runner is capable of in his first career NFL game.

Lions CB Drayton Florence could be out for a while with a forearm injury sustained in Sunday's loss to the 49ers.

Detroit Lions cornerback Drayton Florence could miss multiple games -- and possibly the remainder of the season -- with a right forearm injury, according to Anwar Richardson of Mlive.com. Florence sustained the injury in the second half of the Lions' 27-19 loss to the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night.

Lions head coach Jim Schwartz wasn't too positive about the situation during his comments to the press on Monday:

"He's in the process right now of going through it (evaluations)," Schwartz said. "He got some preliminary stuff at the stadium, but he's going to have some more stuff. It doesn't look real good, but we'll see."

While Schwartz was certainly vague about the details of the injury, he also appears to be quite concerned about it. And for good reason; the Lions are already dealing with injuries to three other defensive backs. Bill Bentley, Chris Houston and Louis Delmas missed Sunday's game, and it's possible that none of the three will be ready for Detroit's Week 3 contest against the Tennessee Titans.
