Jose Valverde blew a 4-0 Tigers lead in the bottom of the ninth inning. Valverde gave up four runs to the Yankees off a pair of two-run homers, tying the game, 4-4, and sending it to extra innings.
Ichiro Suzuki hit a two-run home run off of Valverde in the ninth inning with Russell Martin on second to cut the Tigers lead to 4-2. With two outs in the ninth, Valverde walked Mark Teixeira, bringing up Raul Ibanez who homered to deep right to tie the game 4-4.
Octavio Dotel relieved Valverde in the ninth and struck out Eric Chavez to record the final out of the inning.
The Tigers scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning and added two more in the top of the eighth after Delmon Young hit a solo home run off of reliever Derek Lowe and Avisail Garcia singled home Jhonny Peralta to put the Tigers ahead 4-0.
