Detroit Tigers catcher Alex Avila and center fielder Austin Jackson are both finalists for AL Gold Gloves at their respective position. They were named as finalists on Monday, and the award winners will be named on Tuesday night. The awards show airs at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2.
Avila is competing against the Yankees' Russell Martin, the White Sox's A.J. Pierzynski, and the Orioles' Matt Wieters. Avila played 99 games this season at catcher, committed only six errors and was responsible for 10 passed balls. He ended the season with a .994 fielding percentage.
Jackson is up against the Orioles' Adam Jones and the Angels' rookie phenom, Mike Trout. He played 137 games in center field and committed only one error on the season. He also had five assists and a .997 fielding percentage. Jackson's speed and range in the outfield are why he's widely regarded as one of the best defensive outfielders in the league.
