Before throwing the ball to first base for the final out in the top of the ninth inning on Sunday, Detroit pitcher Al Alburquerque decided to do something that's left a bunch of Athletics players rather unhappy: he put the ball up to his lips and gave it a kiss.
With two outs and runners on the corners in a then-tied game, Alburquerque got Yoenis Cespedes to hit an easy roller right to the pitcher, who decided to get cute with the ball (hat tip to @WorldofIsaac):
After the game, Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick made it clear to reporters that he was, along with his teammates, offended by Alburquerque's move, as Dave Hogg of FOX Sports Detroit tweets:
We didn't appreciate that. I thought it was immature and not very professional. You don't do that on the field.
Part of Reddick's frustration surely stems from the fact that the Athletics are trailing 2-0 to the Tigers in the five-game series as they go back to Oakland after Sunday's 5-4 loss. Since ending the season on such a roll, the A's have hit a major stumbling block against the Tigers, apparently putting them in no mood for Alburquerque's antics.
