Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta is a trade target of the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to a tweet broadcast Tuesday afternoon by Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. Knobler says that the Tigers do not intend to trade Peralta "unless/until they get someone better at shortstop."
Peralta, 30, had his $6 million team option for 2013 exercised by Detroit after the World Series ended. In 2012, Peralta hit .239/.305/.384 in 585 plate appearances.Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski said Monday that Peralta "doesn't get to all the ground balls some shortstops might get, but he's sure-handed and reliable." As a third baseman, Peralta is excellent defensively in a seller's market.
Shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera of the Cleveland Indians also looks to be a trade target for Arizona. The Diamondbacks traded outfielder Chris Young to Oakland last month in a deal that netted them middle infielder Cliff Pennington, along with closer Heath Bell.
